FULL-TIME: What a ridiculous game of rugby. So much entertainment. It was played at 180km/h from the off, when Anscombe went over in the first minute for the first of 11 tries on the night.

After 25 minutes, the Chiefs looked like they would run away with the game, but in the end, they were made to work right until the final whistle.

The returning man Kurtley Beale will take the headlines, after a wonderful cameo which included a superb individual try.

Higginbotham and Pyle were awesome up front, but Anscombe has to get the man of the match honours for his 24 point haul.

James O'Connor took a huge hit right at the end and went off. It was a sore one, but he should be fine. He's a tough lad.

The home side got a couple of TMO decisions their way, but they were both 50/50s, so no real complaints there.

Those Rebels don't know when they're beaten. Good team to watch. Thanks for your company and see you for the next one!

They finally spin it. Beale to Inman. The Chiefs defence holds strong, and hold up the man. They win the turnover and it's all over. Heartbreaker for the Rebels. Rebels 33 Chiefs 39.

Penalty to the Rebels, who take it quick. Pyle goes into contact short, and the home side reset. The ref is screaming "USE IT". The big men pick up and drive. Three points won't do.

The Chiefs have butchered the lineout and it goes straight over the top to the Rebels. They have the ball 2m out as the siren goes!

Great break from Nick Phipps. He finds Cooper Vuna, who is always running towards the touchline as he takes the ball off balance. It's a lineout to the Chiefs.

NO TRY: Knocked on. Anscombe is denied his fourth of the night. James O'Connor has gone off injured in the meantime. He was blindsided by Sam Cane late, and it was a bonerattler. Rebels 33 Chiefs 36 2 mins to go

    Hugh Pyle stretches to score.

The replays show that as Phipps went to pass the ball off the base of the ruck, Osbourne dived through the gate and blocked it. Did it go forward? It's close. No decision yet.

TMO: The Rebels go all out, but they have turned it over on halfway. The Chiefs pinch it, and Anscombe darts unchallenged down the left touchline to go over for what would be the matchwinning try. It's being looked at for a knock-on.

Four minutes to go, and we're down to a 6 point ball game! The Rebels have it from the restart. They bring it out of the 22m with Sidey. The ref blows up, and there is a bug sigh of relief as they get the put in to the scrum.

TRY: You couldn't make this up. Kurtley Beale has just danced through the Chiefs' defence as if he's never been away. He scores a vital try as he goose-steps his way into a gap. What an impact. Absolutely magic. That came from nothing as the Rebels drifted right. The Chiefs thought they had it covered. O'Connor converts the 11th try of the game. Rebels 33 Chiefs 39

Inman and English have put in some hard work here tonight - not the most glamourous pair in Super Rugby, but good journeymen.

So, about ten minutes to go here, and the Rebels are looking to hit straight back. A good scrum in the Chiefs half sees O'Connor and Beale combine again up to the 22m.

TRY: What a blow for the Rebels. Brodie Retallick charges down James O'Connor's low clearance kick with ease about two metres out, and it's the simplest of tries for the big lock. Just as I talk up the No. 10 ..... Anscombe hits the woodwork with the conversion attempt. It's a basketball score. The Rebels have a bonus point though. Rebels 26 Chiefs 39

O'Connor misses the kick. Beale has made a ridiculous impact here. It shows how desperately O'Connor needs someone on his own level outside him. Deans' job just got even harder.

TRY: UNBELIEVABLE! Nick Phipps has scored. What a try. O'Connor gives it to Beale in the Rebels' half with a blind inside pass. Beale destroys his way up the middle. O'Connor doubles in support, and flicks it wide to Phipps, who goes in unchallenged. It's gone to the TMO to look at a forward pass from O'Connor in the first instance, but it's given the all clear! Rebels 26 Chiefs 34 KTC

Penalty to the Chiefs. Anscombe will have a shot at goal. He has 3/5, and it's a hard angle - but it shows how the Chiefs are thinking.

Great heart tonight from the Rebels, who against all odds, are still in the game. Fifteen minutes to go, but I'd still pick the Chiefs. Kurtley Beale has really started to get into this game, and has immediately made O'Connor look better. They are a fearsome combination when they get good ball and a yard of space.

    O'Connor converts Rebels 21 Chiefs 31

Pyle got a brace against the Lions last year. I bet he won't be able to say that ever again.

TRY: The Rebels are giving it everything in front of the home crowd. They run with a penalty advantage, go to the left side of the field, where O'Connor and Beale edge it close. What a combination between the flair pair. Beale comes into the game again, gives it to Pyle, who goes over for his second. Rebels 19 Chiefs 31 KTC

Great clearing kick from Aaron Cruden. An hour gone here in Melbourne as the Chiefs ring the changes. Mike Fitzgerald on for Craig Clarke, Latimer for Vant Leven.

Great defence from the Chiefs. Ged Robinson takes the ball into contact, spins and sets it to Higginbotham, but he is caught short and fumbles. Pressure off. Rebels 14 Chiefs 31

The Rebels win the lineout ball, set up a maul and then run off the back. The Chiefs steal, but fumble and we'll have an attacking 5m scrum from the Rebels.

Here's a trivia question for bragging rights, and a follow from RugbyHeaven. What does the REBEL acronym on the five star logo stand for? Answers in the comments section.

He's got a point, James O'Connor has not had a good game tonight.

Anscombe is getting some ice on the shin. He should get an early mark here, he's put in a shift. First half hat trick, and a decent day off the boot. Rebels 14 Chiefs 31 after 52 minutes.

In the interest of fairness, here's the Kaiser CHIEFS with an appropriate classic.

Oh dear. Kurtley Beale's first act is to send his kick restart straight into touch. Scrum on halfway to the Chiefs.

TRY: After all that, we have the first try of the second half, as Cane goes over. The scrum turns, it comes out the back, Matt Vant Leven goes off the back and pops a blind pass in the tackle, and the openside is in the right place. He goes over under the posts, Anscombe converts with no delay, and the Chiefs are away here. Rebels 14 Chiefs 31

And he's on! Kurtley Beale comes on to save the day. He's got some serious catching up to do if he is to force Robbie Deans' hand. He looks to be in great condition, but is he match fit? He'll wake up sore tomorrow I'm sure.

    Hugh Pyle stretches to score.

We have a successful scrum! The Chiefs go right, but are held up short. So we'll have another 5m scrum to the Chiefs. ><.

And another scrum collapse. They probably only have one more before the ref will have to take action. A penalty try is on the cards if this goes to form. And a possible yellow for Weeks.

Kurtley Beale is doing press-ups on the sideline. Keeping warm or warming up?

The Rebels are pinged for collapsing the scrum, and we'll have another. Messam can smell it here.

Scrum reset (yawn). We'll go again.

The Chiefs have opted for the scrum. They are about five out, just to the left of the posts. Danger here. Theuri scrum has been superb. Rebels 14 Chiefs 24 (for now)

Coach-killer from O'Connor, who kicks it out on the full just outside his 22m. The Chiefs are gifted field position. The lineout is good and they rumble towards the line. They have the ball 2m short. They fail to use the ball, but Higginbotham was in the way and the referee blows for a penalty.

A sloppy start from the Chiefs, who through a loose pass over their own line from a deep kick-off. Chiefs prop Ben Tameifuna cleans up and kicks ahead deep downfield

And we're off again in Melbourne, where the Rebels are trailing the Chiefs 14-24.

It's a spurious link, but here's Steve Harley and Cockney REBELS with a classic. Just because I can.

HALF-TIME: A superb half of rugby here, with the scoreline only telling half the story. The Chiefs came out of the blocks at a sprint, with Gareth Anscombe going over for the first of his three tries before my seat was warm.

The Chiefs raced to a 12 point lead, before industrious work from the home side got them back in the game. It has swung back and forth, with the Chiefs earning a four-try bonus point early doors. Higginbotham and Pyle have contorted their way  over the line, but the Rebels will get nowhere fast by slipping off tackles and turning over their own ball.

The Rebels have the returning Kurtley Beale on the bench. I'd expect his impact to be fairly minimal after his break, but with KB, you never know what you are going to get!

It's got to be a brave 15 point loss for the Rebels here if it goes the same way for the next 40. Join us for the second-half, and let us know what you think of the game so far!

They go right, through O'Connor and English. They are probing the Chiefs defence and using the pitch well. Tom English is having a really decent night. It all comes to nothing as the Rebels lose the ball forward. That should be about that. Rebels 14 Chiefs 24

One last chance for the Rebels to reduce the margin. The lineout ball is good, and they set on the 22m line, centre field.

It's just a warning for the Chief's second rower. He claims "it was just a clean-out" which seems about right.

The TMO is checking for foul play against the Chiefs. Looks like a swinging arm from Brodie Retallick.

And the Chiefs are rattled. They are pinged for holding on in the tackle. Nick Phipps, great work. James O'Connor kicks for the touchline. Rebels lineout, about 30m out. Two minutes until halftime.

The amount of work that went into that try was such a contrast to the Chiefs' tries, which have all been so quick and easy, but great heart from the Rebels, who are giving the crowd - and the Chiefs - a game here.

James O'Connor nails it. Rebels 14 Chiefs 24

TRY: Hugh Pyle goes over after some persistent work from the home side. James O'Connor draws in three defenders, gives it to Tom English. He cuts back across the field. They reset, Vuna goes, it comes wide again and Hugh Pyle switches hands and stretches over. Superb stuff. They deserved that. Rebels 12 Chiefs 24 KTC

So, it's all gone a bit quiet here as we edge towards halftime. The Rebels have an attacking scrum, but it's messy ball as the scrum goes backwards. It pops out awkwardly to Phipps, who flings it to O'Connor. He looks for Inman on the blind reverse, and the ball smashes into the centre's face. Oh dear. Rebels 7 Chiefs 24

So, this time last week, the Chiefs eased off the gas and let the Sharks back into the game. Let's see if they have learnt their lesson. It didn't hurt them in the end last week, and I would suspect they will be laughing all the way home to Waikato at the end of the day.

Again the Chiefs have raced to a four-try bonus point in no time at all. They are looking good for going back to back in this comp.

Anscombe misses. He is human after all. To be fair all three tries have been fairly straightforward for the fullback, but his support play has been fantastic.

TRY: What a break from Nanai-Williams in the midfield. He skips through far too easily, the Chiefs go left and Anscombe is over in the opposite corner to complete his hat trick. The TMO has a  look to see if he's gone into touch, but it was a simple one. Rebels 7 Chiefs 24 KTC

The Rebels are having all sorts of problems down the right hand side. James O'Connor puts in a clearing kick, but it's stayed in play, and the Chiefs will run it back.

The Rebels are on the charge, but no, again they've given away the penalty as the Chiefs counter-ruck and Laurie Weeks dives in to protect the ball. The Chiefs kick deep into the Rebels half. Good positive play from the Rebels, but they have to protect their own ball better.

TRY: Gareth Anscombe goes in for his second try in the same corner. What a year for the Chiefs fullback. You could see that coming a mile off. The Rebels were on the attack through Henderson, the Chiefs turn over and go right. Leonard goes, the ball comes back quickly and there were silly numbers out wide. To be fair the Rebels should have had a penalty at the start of the play when Nick Phipps was clotheslined. Anscombe adds to his huge tally. Rebels 7 Chiefs 19

What a start: Anscombe is congratulated on his first minute try.

So, about 20 minutes gone here, and after a craxy opening ten minutes, things have settled down. It's a very open game here, with both teams trying to run the ball.

RugbyHeaven's own Paul Cully doesn't like it. And the replays suggest he is on the money. As always.

James O'Connor's conversion attempt is good. The Rebels are back in it! Rebels 7 Chiefs 12

Higginbotham did so well to get the ball down at full stretch. And it's good. The pass from English is adjudged to have gone backwards. KTC Rebels 5 Chiefs 12

VIDEO REFEREE: Higginbotham makes a super break up the middle off a long lineout in the Rebels half. He breaks through the centre, finds English outside him, who in turn floats a hail Mary back inside in the tackle. Higginbotham gets tackled, stretches out and plants the ball on the line. The officials are checking the pass.

Another flying start from the Chiefs. The Rebels will hope to respond as well as the Sharks did last week.

Better stuff from the Rebels, as Delve and Robinson rumble up to the 22m. But it's all for nothing, as Ged Robinson is penalised as the Chiefs attempt to pinch. Liam Messam comes over through the gate and it's Chiefs ball. Hugh Pyle is getting the magic sponge.

TRY: Awful, awful defence from the Rebels sees the Chiefs go in again under the posts. It's a ten minute rout, and the Chiefs bench are on their feet. Bundee Aki steps inside, then out, the referee almost falls over, and he's in. Who needs Kahui? Anscombe converts. This could gett ugly. Rebels 0 Chiefs 12 after 10 mins.

And now Garratt Williamson pings the Rebels for an offside just over halfway. It's kickable, but the Chiefs go for the corner.

The first time the Rebels get hands on the ball, they kick it straight back to the grateful Chiefs. They run it up to halfway. The visitors have given the Rebels no time to settle here, and are making easy yards up the middle.

TRY: And it's a disastrous start for the home side, as Gareth Anscombe crosses over in the corner after just one minute. Cruden kicks off, the Rebels try and run it back, fumble and the reigning champions go wide quick to the corner! Anscombe pulls the conversion attempt. Nightmare for the Rebels. Rebels 0 Chiefs 5

Steve Samuelson writes: Wallaby hopeful Kurtley Beale returns on the bench for the Rebels in the only change from last week's Crusaders loss. The Chiefs are without Richard Kahui and the defending champions could be vulnerable if the Rebels bring their A game.

AAP writes: Friday night marks the return of wayward Wallabies star Kurtley Beale. Chastened by his Durban bust-up, Beale will be on the bench to give the Rebels a dangerous second-half option at No.10 or 15. Fellow Wallabies James O'Connor and Scott Higginbotham stood out in the spirited 30-26 loss to the Crusaders to show Melbourne still have some firepower.

The defending champion Chiefs have been up and down over the past month and showed both their enterprise and fragility against the Sharks, jumping to an early 24-0 lead before letting in four tries. Flanker Sam Cane and halfback Brendon Leonard return to the starting side while prop Michael Kainga has been ruled out. Dangerous centre Richard Kahui is again sidelined by a worrying shoulder problem.

Rebels: Jason Woodward, Tom English, Mitch Inman, Rory Sidey, Cooper Vuna, James O`Connor, Nick Phipps, Scott Higginbotham (capt), Scott Fuglistaller, Jarrod Saffy, Cadeyrn Neville, Hugh Pyle, Laurie Weeks, Ged Robinson, Nic Henderson. Reserves: Shota Horie, Paul Alo-Emile, Luke Jones, Gareth Delve, Nick Stirzaker, Kurtley Beale, Lachlan Mitchell.

Chiefs: Gareth Anscombe, Lelia Masaga, Tim Nanai-Williams, Bundee Aki, Asaeli Tikoirotuma, Aaron Cruden, Brendon Leonard, Matt Vant Leven, Sam Cane, Liam Messam (capt), Brodie Retallick, Craig Clarke (capt), Ben Tameifuna, Mahonri Schwalger, Pauliasi Manu. Reserves: Hika Elliot, Toby Smith, Michael Fitzgerald, Tanerau Latimer, Augustine Pulu, Robbie Robinson, Patrick Osborne.
