The Reds have beaten the Waratahs 25-17 at Suncorp Stadium in a pretty willing derby. The Reds skipped out to a 17-3 lead after just 15 minutes before the Tahs levelled it at 17-all in the second half. But it was a bullocking run from Ed Quirk as he set up Ben Tapuai that made the difference. Both sides were out on their feet and it was waiting for someone to bust the game open. Quirk was the man tonight and he saves the day for the Reds.
The Tahs showed some good intent tonight but may not have the cattle to execute that game plan just yet, or need more time to work on their cohesion when they spin it wide. Foley did a good job or distributing the ball but too often it went sideways with no straight running.
The Reds backrow of Jake Schatz, Quirk and Liam Gill was superb.
Fulltime has sounded and that's a penalty to the Reds. And they are going to run it and have a crack at a bonus point. No dice.
Huge shot from Ioane on Folau. Just crunched him and forced the turnover. Can't blame Folau there - it was a complete hospital ball and Ioane was buried in his ribs the moment he caught the ball. Reds lead 25-17 with 30 seconds on the clock.
Kane Douglas = implosion. The Tahs win the ball, spin it wide, then he throws it to nobody and it rolls harmlessly into touch. That could have been their chance.
TRY to the Reds! What a run from Ed Quirk to set that up. Just powered through five defenders and looked like he'd go all the way himself. Folau rounds him up eventually but Ben Tapuai on hand to run a metre and score. That's a hell of a run. It started as he brushed off Kane Douglas and then it was all ahead of him. What a moment for the Reds. Harris misses the kick. Reds lead 25-17 with five to play.Back to top
The Tahs attack but Cooper is cleaned up off the ball and the Reds get a penalty. They ledger is being squared a bit late in the game. I make the count 10-6 to the Tahs, who are back with the ball incidentally.
He's kicked it! I gave him no chance but he's made it with change. Stabbed it low and hard and the Reds lead 20-17. There's still 11 minutes on the clock. The Mike Harris range is officially 49.5 metres.
The Reds have the line out pilfered and Ewen McKenzie must be having a coronary. But that will cheer him up as the Reds win the ball back on the ground and manage to get a penalty in the process. Mike Harris is going to have a shot here, about 49m out. I'm not sure he has the legs to get this. Shows the Reds need a spell. It's 17-all.
Cooper loses it in the tackle, or tried to pass it, or something. I can't tell anymore. This is horrible.
James Hanson tags out Saia Faingaa and takes that throw. Reds finally on the attack but getting a pounding from the Tahs forwards. And now they've knocked it on. Now Wallace-Harrison takes over from O'Donaghue. This game has been frantic and brutal and it's starting to show, for the Reds at least. It's 17-all.Back to top
John Ulugia demolishes Jake Schatz. And now the Reds give the ball away. The Tahs chase hard and had the Reds in strife but Queensland get the penalty. They are holding on by the skin of their teeth now. Tahs size and strength just too much at this point. But another penalty to the Reds and they need these. Folau the man done for being a bit cheeky around the ruck.
Foley gets it. Scores are level at Suncorp Stadium. It's 17-all between the Reds and the Tahs but it's the men from south of the border with all the running as we hit the 60 minute mark.
TRY to the Tahs. It's Ben Volavola and the Reds are gassing up badly. Volavola found himself up against Mike Harris in the backline and just had way too much pace. Harris can kick, can't run. Kick to come. It's 17-15.
Cooper was hammered in that last exchange but managed to stab a decent kick down into the Tahs 22, which was kicked out by Volavola. Folau thought about hoofing it but opted to pass it wide, which was the right thing to do. Now the Tahs back in control, forcing a turnover and winning the attacking line out. Pouring on the pressure now. Reds need a lift. They lead 17-10.
The Reds manage to win the scrum, Cooper clears off a scrappy pass and... Drew Mitchell drops an absolute sitter. Another gift to the Reds and maybe that's the play that releases the pressure. Polota-Nau and Kepu off for the Tahs, Paddy Ryan and Ulugia take the field.Back to top
The Tahs have butchered that! Volavola, what was he doing? They had the Reds on toast out to the left and the pass was average. Instead of picking it up, he tried to flick it on to Chapman, who couldn't get the handle. The Reds can count themselves very lucky there. Tahs well on top at the moment in basically every aspect bar the scoreboard. Reds lead 17-10 but for how much longer?
Now a Reds knock on, just after they forced the turnover. Tahs scrum 30m out. Great spot for them to attack if they can find that man Folau. The Reds cannot take a trick at the moment and this is a huge test of character for them early in the season and a loss already under their belt.
And another penalty to the Tahs, this time Ed O'Donaghue at fault. Apparently tackled a player without the ball. Queensland getting hammered by the ref here. They need to pull their heads in with the penalty count now 9-2. Nick Frisby now on the park for Ben Lucas. I can sense a momentum shift towards the Tahs. Reds lead 17-10.
MASSIVE scrum from the Tahs and they win it against the feed. And now a mini-stoush after the Tahs win the penalty. That's more like it lads.
Cooper with the little grubber and that's a handy kick, although the Tahs have managed to scramble and survive. Foley managed to plant the ball but there could be a Tahs knock-on in the preceding play. Reds scrum five metres out from the Waratah line. Good chance to get a few points back after that Folau try.Back to top
