Moore also insists the lineout wobbles can be immediately rectified and the scrum confidence has not been dented despite some struggles against the Flying Fijians.

The Wallabies are third in the 'pool of death' rankings, sitting behind England and Wales who both scored four-try bonus points in their opening games. The Wallabies had to hang tough and rack up a mountain of defence in the second half to beat Fiji 28-13 in Cardiff on Wednesday (Thursday morning AEST).

The Wallabies scored three tries in the first 42 minutes, but failed to land a knockout blow and a bonus point which could prove costly in the pool stages. They turned down a chance to go for a fourth try when leading 25-13, instead choosing to extend their buffer beyond two converted tries to snuff out Fiji's attempted comeback.

"It was a pretty positive start … We gave ourselves chances there in that first 42 minutes to score tries and we didn't get up that end of the field [in the last 30 minutes]," Moore said. "Sometimes that's the way it goes. We honestly didn't talk about bonus points during the week. Test footy and the World Cup is about winning.

"If you lose a game in the pool stage you're up against it so we're just focusing on our next game and making sure we play well against Uruguay on Sunday."

A booming rendition of Swing Low Sweet Chariot at Millennium Stadium may have served as a timely reminder that England are in pole position in the group stages.

But coach Michael Cheika echoed Moore's sentiment, saying that he had to check with his staff before the tournament whether bonus points were even part of the World Cup.

Asked if he was frustrated that the Wallabies missed out on a bonus point, Cheika said: "No, we haven't thought about that. It's not Super Rugby, it's a World Cup.

"I'm not counting points, I just want to win a game and then try and win the next one. That's it.

"I preach to my team about being humble and going into the match with Fiji and thinking about claiming a bonus point off them is not the right thing, especially the way they played the other night.

"...But it was exactly what we needed, I was really pleased with some of the things in the performance."

The Wallabies' set piece got a surprise test against the Fijians, who are better known for their flair than some grunt in the forward pack.

The scrum struggled to keep possession in the opening stages and then the lineout seemed to fall apart when Rob Simmons left the field.

Moore praised the team's defence and work rate, but was unperturbed by losing three attacking lineouts in a row.

"I thought it was pretty good in the first half and we just had that period in the second half where we made a few errors in a row," he said.

"It's a combination of things and we'll tidy that up … that's something we can get better at collectively and individually."

Prop James Slipper will likely miss the clash against Uruguay after suffering concussion.

The short turnaround means it's unlikely Slipper will be able to complete all return to play protocols in time to be on the field in Birmingham on Sunday, opening the door for Toby Smith to make his World Cup debut.
