Foley proved his nerves of steel when he nailed a last-minute penalty to lift the Wallabies to a one-point triumph against Scotland last weekend to keep their tournament dream alive.

The good news for the Wallabies is that Foley says he's ready to shoulder the pressure when Australia has its backs against the wall to 'bring my own flavour' to the World Cup.

That could mean stepping up again when the Wallabies play Argentina in the semi-final at Twickenham on Sunday (Monday morning AEDT).

Foley has been dubbed the 'Iceman' for his growing reputation of standing tall when it matters most, booting the NSW Waratahs to a Super Rugby title last year and saving the Wallabies more than once.

"I know who Iceman is. It doesn't bother me, but doesn't he die in the end?" Foley said when asked if he'd watch Tom Cruise in Top Gun and he was happy to be the Iceman.

"OK. You always want to be Maverick because he gets the girl, doesn't he? But I'll be Iceman.

"…I suppose it's your job, you want to stand up. If you're the one who knows what's in mind with the strategy and how you want to play, there's no point going into your shell and leaving it for someone else.

"We talk about playing our music and as a side that's what we all want to do, and bringing your own flavour to it but also doing your job for the team.

"[As the No. 10], not just in your kicking roles, but in general play and ordering people around, commanding that we get to our strategy and shape."

Foley said his last-minute penalty was proof that the Wallabies possess the belief they can dig themselves out of any situation.

Scotland snatched the lead by scoring a try from an intercept pass with seven minutes remaining and the Wallabies' World Cup hopes looked dead in the water until referee Craig Joubert awarded Australia a controversial penalty.

Foley didn't hesitate in taking the reins, despite an off night with his kicking accuracy, and he made the most of his opportunity.

Coach Michael Cheika spoke with kicking coach Chris Malone at half-time about whether Foley should continue with the goal-kicking duties after missing his first three shots.

"One of the good things about Bernard is that he's never lacked confidence," Malone said.

"It was an easy fix, it wasn't anything major and he just had to concentrate on one thing. I was confident, as were the rest of the coaches, that we fixed that."

Foley said "staying in the kick" was the key to his accuracy turnaround that saved the Wallabies from an early tournament exit.

He also said training sessions where fellow kickers and coaches can shout abuse at the man lining up a shot helped deal with the pressure of the situation.

"It's all part of it, and I guess removing yourself from the context and the situation for the kick. Doing the kick over and over is what it comes back to, not thinking about the consequences," Foley said.

Much of the focus of the Wallabies' presence in the semi-finals has centred around Joubert's controversial penalty decision which ended Scotland's campaign.

But the Wallabies showed their attack is a dangerous weapon, scoring five tries and squandering at least two more.

They conceded three tries, but one of those was from an intercept and the other was from a Foley kick that was charged down.

"The attack as a unit, we attacked quite well, got over the gainline quite well and we were very dangerous in that," Foley said.

"There are always areas you can improve and there were certainly unforced errors at the weekend and it's some something we're not happy with.

"We don't want to be doing them again, that's what I learned in these games."
