The Wallabies officially started their World Cup campaign when they arrived in London on Monday night Australian time and they will be public enemy No. 1 with a pool match against hosts England.

It's a world away from the low-key preparation in Chicago and Indiana where more people were talking about Jarryd Hayne's NFL conversion than Australia's hopes of winning its third World Cup.

But Mumm says being able to escape the "hype and hoopla" that has engulfed England has given coach Michael Cheika an opportunity to put the polish on the Wallabies' title hopes.

The Wallabies start the pool stage with two games in five days against Fiji and Uruguay before turning their attention to rivals Wales and England.

"When we touch down [in England] it starts to hit us, you know the start of the World Cup isn't far away," Mumm said.

"Being in Chicago, Indiana and Notre Dame has allowed us to focus on what we want to do and how we want to play.

"That's really important, we want to play a certain style and we want to see if works against the opposition.

"The chance to get away from some of the hype and hoopla that rightly goes with a World Cup has given us a great chance to focus on ourselves."

The Wallabies rubbed shoulders with US college sporting elite and trained at multi-million-dollar facilities to fine-tune their World Cup plans.

It allowed them to fly under the radar with minimal distractions while England and Wales have dominated British headlines with injuries and high expectations.

But the trip to the US was anything but a holiday, and Mumm said Cheika was driving a culture of inter-squad rivalry that ensures almost every training session ends with blood being spilt.

Cheika is set to pick two completely different starting line-ups for the matches against Fiji and Uruguay given there are just three days between games.

"We've been able to work with a minimum of fuss," Cheika said.

"There's been a few interested spectators [at training], but rugby isn't centre stage over here so it's been easy for the guys to work and not have any of the distractions."

Mumm is still pinching himself after relaunching his Wallabies career.

The versatile second-rower is fighting for a spot in the starting XV and he adds valuable experience to a forward pack which is expected to be put under the blowtorch.

The 31-year-old returned to Australia at the end of the Super Rugby season after a four-season stint in English rugby with Exeter.

His unexpected Wallabies recall has taught him to appreciate the Wallabies jersey even more, but at the same time his stint as Exeter captain opened his eyes to a new style of rugby.

"I'm very excited, when I left [England] it was very uncertain if I'd be coming back so I'm certainly very, very proud to be coming back as part of a Wallabies team," Mumm said.

"My time in England gave me perspective of what it means to play for your country because when you leave you give up the opportunity to play for Australia.

"I never thought I'd do it again, so every time you train or play now you don't take it for granted.

"The other element is that you have a greater understanding of the English mentality and the way they perceive certain elements of the game."

Hooker James Hanson has returned to Australia and will play in the National Rugby Championships in Sydney this weekend.

Hanson is the back-up rake with Cheika opting to only take two specialist No. 2s in his squad.

But while players including locks Sam Carter and James Horwill will be playing in Europe to be ready for an SOS, Hanson went in the opposite direction when the Wallabies left the US.
