The Wallabies are still riding high after a crushing win against England at Twickenham last weekend, setting the stage for Australia and Wales to duel for pool A supremacy.

But Cheika says he won't be drawn into a war of words with Gatland or fire back at the experts that threw plenty of barbs at the Wallabies before a 33-13 win against hosts England.

The Wallabies have won their past 10 Test against Wales, a streak that stretches seven years and Gatland's entire tenure as Wales coach.

Wales were dealt a massive blow for the World Cup began when Leigh Halfpenny and Rhys Webb were ruled out of the tournament and have been dealt further blows throughout the pool stages.

However, they managed to ambush England two weeks ago and Cheika is taking no chances against Gatland - a coach he regards as a tactical genius.

"I was coaching over here while he was bringing Wales through ... just the way he had put them back into place and he's had longevity ... kept it very calm, giving them the confidence they need and self-belief to go forward as a national side," Cheika said.

"They've won a couple of Six Nations, they've been the dominant players in Celtic rugby ... and he coached the [British and Irish Lions] to victory [against the Wallabies in 2013] so there's not much more you can ask a guy to do."

The Wallabies have their own injury concerns as they wait for scan results on Rob Horne's shoulder, but Matt Giteau (sternum) and Israel Folau (ankle) are expected to join team training on Monday.

Wales have suffered the biggest injury curse of any team at the World Cup, but Cheika said the Wallabies would not take their foot off the pedal and be lured into a Welsh trap.

The winner of the match will finish at the top of the group and avoid clashes against New Zealand and Ireland on the path to the final.

"They've [Wales] had a difficult run with injuries and that can sometimes galvanise your team," Cheika said.

"That's where the coach and the smarts of the coach comes in as well. What we're not going to do is start changing the way we look at things because maybe the pool situation has changed.

"I feel like the Welsh supporters will storm Twickenham and turn it red. I want to make sure we are ready for that."

The Wallabies haven't lost a Test against Wales since 2008 and winger Adam Ashley-Cooper said: "We have had a good run against Wales, but anything can happen. A lot of results in this tournament have proved that.

"From my World Cup experience, finishing top of your pool is very important."

World Cup-winning coaches Sir Graham Henry and Sir Clive Woodward did their best to rattle the Wallabies, questioning their preparation and their rugby intelligence before the game against England.

Gatland is a master at off-field mind games and he will almost certainly lob a verbal bomb into Wallabies camp this week.

But Cheika - who is known for his fiery temperament and angry outbursts - isn't buying into it.

"I have been very good - they haven't lured me in at all," Cheika grinned.

"I have tried to stay pretty neutral. I am learning that when you truly believe in your team then all that stuff is irrelevant. You just pour all of your belief into your team. That's part of the fun I suppose."
