Today Powell is a Wallaby and his 19-year-old club teammate Lonergan is ready to "prove a point" and show he has what it takes to reach the top in Australian rugby.

Lonergan has been named in Brumbies acting head coach Dan McKellar's 22-man squad to take on the Asia Pacific Dragons in Singapore next Thursday.

The Brumbies struck a multi-year deal to play in Singapore as Australian clubs look to break new ground overseas.

Four John I Dent Cup players have been selected with Tuggeranong Vikings trio, lock Darcy Swain, prop Sione Taula and utility back Andrew Robinson joined in the squad by Royals' winger George Morseu.

Lonergan is "dying" for a crack at Super Rugby and will do everything he can to impress incoming Brumbies coach McKellar when he takes the reins for the four-day tour.

While the teenager is stuck behind a pair of international halfbacks in Powell and Argentinian Tomas Cubelli in Canberra, he is confident his time will come - all he needs is one chance.

Powell's average minutes played has skyrocketed from 21 to 73 per game this season following Cubelli's injury and it has launched him into a Wallabies jersey.

"It does [inspire me], especially because it was only a few years back that he was an apprentice for my old man," Lonergan said.

"Now he's playing for the Wallabies and it really is something special. It just goes to show that if you just put your mind in the right spot and work really hard for something, you can do quite a lot.

"We do a lot of passing after training and stuff and I really do focus on what he does and what I need to work on.

"I do ask him questions, same with Cubelli, so we've got plenty of experience and talent in the halfback role at the Brumbies so I've been taking that with both hands and gaining as much experience as I can from those two.

"I've been tuned right in whenever they give me a bit of advice and just take it all in."

Lonergan has battled injuries and concussions this year but he is hoping a trip to Singapore will be the perfect tonic to cure his body's woes.

But instead of dwelling on what he calls "just a part of rugby", Lonergan is keen to put his best foot forward under McKellar's watchful eye.

"You've just got to get over it and look at the positives and just keep working hard in the areas you can," Lonergan said.

"My time will come and and I've just got to be patient for that. I'm dying for it to be honest, everyone is. That's why we're training and we're not here just to train.

"The goal is to play and that's why we love it, so I'd love to get some time and I've just got to keep working hard for that."
