Brumbies chief executive Phil Thomson said losing one of the club's biggest drawcards is "disappointing" after Super Rugby crowds hit their lowest total in 11 years this season.

Adding to the hurt is the fact the Brumbies are down one home game with seven slated for Canberra Stadium rather than eight.

"It's one of our biggest matches," Thomson said.

"Obviously not having a major drawcard like the Waratahs will potentially hurt our home crowd numbers, but we've got a number of very exciting games scheduled for 2017 and we're looking forward to getting everyone out there."

The Brumbies' final home game is against the Melbourne Rebels on June 3 – seven weeks out from the end of the regular season factoring in the representative break.

Thomson said losing the momentum of drawing crowds has always been an issue in that period but sees another finals berth as the way to arrest that.

"Hopefully we're in the position to be making the finals again in 2017 and once we get the opportunity to have another game at home the crowd will get behind us and get out to GIO Stadium," Thomson said.

"Obviously we wouldn't have had much football in our own backyard for a while. It'll be a great opportunity for the supporters to come back out and get back into the rugby and support the boys."

After kicking off their season in Christchurch, the Brumbies have home matches against the Sharks and Force, before a date with the Waratahs in Sydney.

That will be the only clash between the top two Australian teams of recent years with the Waratahs to also play just one derby against old rivals Queensland.

Thomson hopes fans will jump on direct flights to Wellington on April 21 to play the Hurricanes in a clash sandwiched by byes in round six and round 11.

Back-to-back away trips are slated for late May with the Brumbies playing in Argentina for the first time just seven days after a clash with the Kings in Port Elizabeth.

"It's one of the real positives of rugby that you can travel to those countries," Thomson said.

"I'm sure the players will be looking forward to getting over to South Africa then on to Argentina to Buenos Aires to play the Jaguares."

The Australian teams all play their last two games after a five-week break for the June Tests, with the finals series starting on July 21 and the final set for August 5.

The competition goes on a month-long hiatus for the representative period after round 15.
