The Brumbies have firmed as one of the competition favourites after dismantling the NSW Waratahs and the Wellington Hurricanes in the first two games of the season.

It sets them up for the long journey to Perth, Cape Town and Bloemfontein in a season-defining run that could form the foundation for their goal of finishing at the top of the table.

But Larkham insists there is still plenty for his team to work on despite running in 11 tries in two games and bashing their way to a 32-15 win against the Waratahs in a brutal Australian derby on Friday night.

The Brumbies will now spend three weeks on the road for the first time since 2010 when they won two of three matches.

"We've always liked [having this trip] earlier in the season, we get over there and it seems to suit us by going earlier," Larkham said.

"We've done incredibly well travelling to South Africa for finals games in the past few years, but it catches up with you.

"We're on the road now for a pretty tough road trip. But we'd rather do it now. Every team looks at the top of the table, there's going to be plenty of talk [about us] but we know there's a lot of rugby to be played.

"We want to realise our goal, everyone is trying to get to the top of the table but being at the top at the start of the season and at the end of the season are two very different things."

Larkham will weigh up his squad options this week for the tour. A squad will fly to Perth for the game against the Western Force on Friday night and extras will join the team for clashes against the Cape Town Stormers and the Free State Cheetahs.

Lock Rory Arnold and fullback Robbie Coleman played for the Brumby Runners against Sydney University on Saturday as the pair fight to get back into the game-day squad.

Arnold looks all but certain to return after Blake Enever suffered a serious shoulder injury against the Waratahs, while Coleman is regaining his fitness after a pre-season calf problem.

Enever is the first major injury the Brumbies have suffered this year, while the Waratahs limped out of the battle with Bryce Hegarty suffering a suspected ACL injury, Rob Horne battling a knee complaint, Tatafu Polota-Nau fracturing his wrist and Tolu Latu to face a judicial hearing for punching Matt Toomua.

Brumbies outside centre Tevita Kuridrani was cited for a high tackle on Kurtley Beale, but escaped with a warning from the citing commissioner.

There was plenty of niggle, an all-in-brawl and punches as the Brumbies showed they could win ugly in their clash against the Waratahs.

They looked rattled for most of the game as the rushing NSW defence continually got in their faces and caused plenty of disruption.

But somehow they held on to win their first two games of the season for the first time since 2013.

"Just about everyone will be sore after a game like that [against the Waratahs]. There's a lot of work to be done still," Larkham said.

Brumbies flanker Scott Fardy said: "As a team we're happy with the way we were able to grind our way to a win, but there's still a lot to improve on.

"There were too many errors, we need to get better at execution. Now we've got a great opportunity to get away with each other and really enjoy each other's company.

"You've got to have a positive mindset when you go away. You've got to train your arse off while you're away but you also have to enjoy time together and build those family ties."
