But instead of re-igniting his Super Rugby career, Larkham will line up in a Golden Oldies clash at Jamison Oval on Saturday to help celebrate his old club Wests' 50th anniversary.

Larkham will lead a cavalcade of ex-stars who have conquered everything on offer in international rugby - including Joe Roff, Owen Finegan and Clyde Rathbone - in a Wests Legends versus ACT Legends match on Saturday.

Less than a month ago, Brumbies coach Jake White tried to lure Larkham out of retirement to be the answer to the club's flyhalf injury woes. Larkham briefly entertained the idea, but said he had faith in youngster Zack Holmes.

But now he'll test himself on the field again and to make Larkham realise why he didn't make a comeback, former teammate Roff has promised to ''remind him why he's not playing Super Rubgy'' with some brutal hits.

And even if one of the greatest playmakers in Wallabies history finds his groove, he insists it won't be the start of a fairytale return.

''I feel pretty fit at the moment, but I'll see how I go. I should be fine for one game, I'm not looking to put any big shots on,'' Larkham said.

''I guess it made me think about it [when Jake asked] and how I might go.

''But since then my focus has been on Zack and the games we've played.''

Larkham will almost be unrecognisable when he runs on to the field. He won't be wearing his trademark headgear and his body won't be covered in strapping tape like it was when he retired from Tests in 2007.

Several players from the Brumbies' early and most successful era will line up on Saturday, with the teams between them boasting almost 300 Test caps, more than 300 Super Rugby appearances, Super Rugby titles, World Cups, Bledisloe Cups and Tri Nations triumphs.

Most players will be pulling on the boots for the first time in almost a decade.

Larkham retired from the Brumbies five years ago, but finished his playing days in Japan last year.

Roff hasn't played since he was with Oxford in 2008.

Larkham and Roff were major contributors to the Brumbies' two Super Rugby championships.

But they'll square off this weekend to rekindle a rivalry that began when they were rising through the Canberra club ranks with Wests and Tuggeranong.

''I still want to get out there and beat Bernie any time I'm on the field, so anything could happen,'' Roff said.

''The sad thing is Bernie could have played a few weeks ago but there is a very good chance I will remind him why he's not playing Super Rugby.

''We came out of school and he was a lanky halfback for Wests and I was a skinny outside centre for Tuggeranong.

''Chess, cards … anything slightly competitive we were always at it … nothing springs to mind [in which] he was at better than me.''

Larkham said the memory of a game where Roff ran the length of the field to score a try ''still irks me''.

''If I do get a chance to put a shot on Roffy I'll definitely take it,'' Larkham said.

''Roffy was never intimidating when he played at the top level let alone this one, the one I'm worried about is Rath.''

White also tried to lure Rathbone into a comeback for the Brumbies this season after he revealed his fight with depression.

And at 30 years old, Larkham and Roff said Rathbone was the danger man in a game of legends.
