The Brumbies' back-row stocks took a massive hit at the world club 10s in Mauritius on Sunday when Smiler was told he faces up to six weeks on the sideline after suffering medial ligament damage in his knee.

Smiler was set to replace David Pocock in the back row when Super Rugby resumes on July 1.

But now the Brumbies will be forced to reshuffle their line-up, with Michael Wells and Ben Hyne now in contention for the starting XV.

Pocock is unlikely to be available until the first week of the finals after fracturing his eye socket, while Smiler could be back in time to play the last regular season game against the Western Force.

Smiler was reduced to spectator duties as the Brumbies beat French team Euskadi and then the Durban Sharks to secure a place in the 10s final and set up an all-Australian clash against the Western Force for the trophy.

"My knee just didn't feel right and it doesn't look good ... we're not 100 per cent sure but we'll have scans when we get back to Canberra," Smiler said.

"It could be between four and six weeks ... it's unlucky but you can't control these things. That's rugby, it's just unfortunate that it happened in a tournament I was enjoying and obviously building up to finals in Super Rugby as well.

"My focus now is just on rehab. It sucks that I can't play but I have to move forward and try to make sure I get it right to hopefully play in finals. You've got to focus on that, and put myself in the best position to get it right."

Smiler was one of the Brumbies' best performers at the world club 10s as they won their first four games and set their sights on lifting the trophy.

They started finals day with a thumping 43-5 win against French team Euskadi, made up of players from Aviron Bayonnais, Bordeaux and Basque. They then booked a spot in the final by beating the Sharks 7-5.

But Smiler stood on the sideline in a knee brace for an unwanted birthday present.

The 31-year-old leaves a massive gap in the Brumbies' forward pack given his ability to play in the second row or anywhere in the back row.

Jarrad Butler was expected to move to openside flanker to take over from Pocock with Smiler to fill in at No. 8.

Former Australian sevens player Wells and Tuggeranong Vikings big man Hyne will now be options for coach Stephen Larkham as the Brumbies prepare for games against the Reds, the Blues and Force to finish the regular season.

"Jordy had been awesome in the tournament so it's sad to see him out and from a Brumbies perspective it's not the greatest news," said Michael Dowsett.

"But guys like Michael Wells have had a fantastic tournament so far and I'm sure guys will lift and account for his absence."

Dowsett scored a double in the win against Euskadi to set the Brumbies up for their 10s redemption mission after losing the final in extra-time in 2014.

Nigel Ah Wong also scored two tries as the Brumbies ran in seven to stamp their authority on the competition.

"It was a bit tougher than we thought early on but then we ran away from it. We're pretty focused on lifting the trophy and we'll give it a good crack," Dowsett said.
