McCabe is in career-best form after breaking his neck twice since November 2012, scoring two tries in the Brumbies' 26-9 win against the Auckland Blues on Friday night.

McCabe also says the confidence in his neck never wavered despite watching NRL player Alex McKinnon's heartbreaking neck injury which could end his career.

McCabe revealed he still had not spoken to new Wallabies coach McKenzie, preferring to concentrate on keeping his place in the Brumbies' starting XV.

But the courageous inside centre is steadily forcing his way back on to the radar less than a year after breaking his neck against the British and Irish Lions.

McCabe's form for the Brumbies has been so good he is keeping incumbent Wallabies No.12 Christian Lealiifano out of the starting side.

''It's hard to say about form, I haven't spoken to Ewen and I don't really know what he wants,'' McCabe said.

''To be honest with [Matt Toomua and Lealiifano at the Brumbies], I'm just worried about trying to get a game here.

''If I can keep getting a game here, things could happen down the line. It means in the back line there's no room for complacency, because if you do there's a Wallaby ready to take your spot."

McCabe has watched Newcastle Knights forward Alex McKinnon's horror story.

McKinnon broke his neck against the Melbourne Storm two weeks ago, was put in an induced coma and has been told he may never walk again.

Just a month ago, McCabe feared his career was over when he thought he had broken his neck for a third time.

''Everyone hates to see that [McKinnon] happen. All I can say is our best wishes go out to him,'' McCabe said.

''I don't think I can relate to it because of the severity of his [injury]. But all the guys are thinking about him.

''I had a bit of scare [last month], but since then I haven't had any problems, so hopefully it stays that way.''

McCabe was outstanding against the Blues and crucial to the Brumbies getting some winning momentum before a blockbuster clash against the Queensland Reds on Friday.

Blues coach John Kirwan described McCabe as courageous while Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham said it was the best game he had seen McCabe play.

''I think he's definitely in Ewen's sights. He's an excellent footballer and a great team man,'' Fisher said.

'''When you pick teams, you like people who you can trust and are reliable ... that's where Patty is and I think he'll be quite high in the thoughts of Wallabies selectors if he continues this form.'''

McCabe has added a new passing dimension to his game this season.

In the past McCabe was known as a bash and crash centre, but his new elements are creating more space and opportunities.

Brumbies skipper Ben Mowen has previously described McCabe as one of the toughest players in Super Rugby, likening him to movie cult hero Chuck Norris.

''I think the competition for spots is bringing the best out of those guys,'' Mowen said.

''Patty Mac has been outstanding, one of, if not the, best player for us this year and that's off the back of two broken necks.

''He's an extremely tough bloke, but the growth in his game has been the subtle passing game. Maybe he thinks, 'Bugger it, I'll just go as hard as I can all the time'. That's what you get from Patty Mac.''
