ARU officials are considering a long list of new laws for the NRC, which will include a Canberra Vikings team when it starts in August, and attacking rugby is at the top of the agenda.

The Brumbies are on the verge of a club-record equalling winning streak of five games if they beat the Melbourne Rebels at AAMI Park on Friday night.

But last season's Super Rugby grand finalists have scored just one four-try bonus point in their spectacular run of form.

Larkham, one of the Wallabies' greatest attacking playmakers, said the Brumbies' only focus was winning rugby.

He backed plans to use experimental laws in the NRC with a view they could be transferred to Super Rugby.

"Changing the amount of points [three] for penalties is a good idea, making it more valuable to score tries is the key," Larkham said.

"It all needs to be around making sure the ball is in play a lot longer and the team gets rewarded more for tries, or a law change which gives teams opportunities to score more tries.

"I like the contest or scrum, maul and lineout, people need to appreciate those intricacies of the game. Everyone would like to see [attacking rugby], but the game is quite complex. You don't want to see the contest taken away.

"They have to be very careful with the changes they make ... there are different elements of rugby which make it unique and, I'm a traditionalist, I think they're important in the game."

The NRC will boast nine teams from Sydney, Brisbane, NSW country, Canberra, Melbourne and Perth.

Running of the Canberra team will be split three ways between the Brumbies, University of Canberra and the Vikings Group to reduce the financial risk of running a $300,000 team.

"We had the ARC [in 2007] and a couple of [Super Rugby] franchises didn't care for the competition and wasted some of the ARU's money," Larkham said.

"This year I think it's in the right direction. We need that second tier to really develop competition in Australia."

The Brumbies are aiming for their fifth consecutive win when they clash against the Rebels in Melbourne.

The Brumbies have only twice before – in 2000 and 2002 – won five games in a row in a regular season in Super Rugby history.

They have stamped themselves as the most dominant Australian team after back-to-back wins against the NSW Waratahs and Cape Town Stormers.

Larkham said an intense start to the Super Rugby season had left the players drained and had lightened their workload this week to refresh them before taking on the Rebels.

The only aspect which has managed to elude the Brumbies is bonus points.

They have scored 14 tries in five matches and four wins, but only secured a four-try bonus point against the Wellington Hurricanes.

It is by no means cause for panic and the Brumbies' No.1 priority is winning.

But the club's finals bid has been destroyed five times since 2006 by a lack of bonus points.

"Certainly not before the game, we don't talk about bonus points, we only talk about winning," Larkham said.

"Once you're in the game it comes down to game management. If it's a tight game, we'll always take the win first.

"That's why they made it the 'magical four' try bonus point, because it's so difficult to score four. We're pleased with the way we're scoring tries and I think it will come for us, it's not something we're going to force."
