Fisher sent an email to Canberra clubs asking them to nominate their best players to be included in a new program to bridge the gap between amateur and professional rugby.

Fisher also encouraged all teams to back the Canberra Vikings despite some angst by rusted-on club rugby supporters.

As Royals teenager Tom Staniforth prepares to be thrust into Super Rugby against the Queensland Reds on Friday to cover Brumbies injuries, Fisher declared the Brumbies are determined to uncover talent in the Canberra competition.

Fisher, Stephen Larkham and Dan McKellar had organised to watch all John I Dent Cup games on Saturday before wet weather cancelled the opening round of the season.

Fisher will fly back to Canberra this weekend after the Brumbies' clash against the Queensland Reds to cast his eye over the talent.

There was a view the Canberra Vikings would be a breeding ground for the Tuggeranong Vikings' players.

But Fisher is organising for Canberra players to train on Wednesday nights on a program designed by Brumbies staff to give them a head start against the rest of the NRC rivals.

"We want the best club players in on a Wednesday night doing some gym and weights, talking about recovery and those things," Fisher said.

"It's about getting the best players from the clubs, increasing their training and focusing on getting them in a better position to compete for a spot in the NRC teams.

"We need to be as well prepared as we can be. If we can assist in physically developing players with skill work, that contributes to the local competition."

The long list of Brumbies injuries has opened the door for club players like Staniforth to push their case for Super Rugby selection and they will benefit when the NRC starts in August.

The Vikings team will be made up of Brumbies contracted players and the best from Canberra's club competition.

There has been debate about the name and colours of Canberra's team in the ARU's new domestic competition.

The Vikings are set to wear red and white, but there have been calls for the team to adopt traditional ACT colours of blue, white and gold.

ARU boss Bill Pulver addressed some aggrieved ACT rugby fans in an online forum.

"This is one of those sensitive issues ... I do understand both sides of this debate," Pulver said.

"I must say though, it’s great to see the passion that has been generated by this debate – and I wish the team every success in arriving at a compromise."

Brumbies fullback Jesse Mogg was plucked from Wests' first grade side and has since made his Wallabies debut.

The Brumbies also invite the best club players to train with the team in pre-season.

"I guarantee anyone playing first grade rugby in Canberra would love to be involved in the NRC team, regardless of what it looks like," Fisher said.

"There will be no politics or worrying about what colour the jumper is. Guys will be working hard to impress in the local competition because we'll be watching them."
