The Brumbies resume pre-season on Monday, but Vaea's future remains uncertain after tests last month revealed he is still suffering from blood clots that stalled his career more than a year ago.

Vaea had hoped to return to rehabilitation training with the Brumbies, but the Tongan No.8 must continue with blood-thinning medication that makes it too dangerous for him to train.

''It was only a little clot … I am just waiting to see what is happening before I make a move,'' Vaea said.

''I just want to get myself fixed first before I even start talking about playing or training again.

''It has been hard and I am disappointed. But it takes a long time, I have to be patient.''

Vaea still has a contract with the Brumbies and is officially part of the 30-man roster. Coaching duo Stephen Larkham and Laurie Fisher won't fill Vaea's spot and the club is committed to helping the 24-year-old get back to full health.

In his time away from rugby, Vaea has become an ambassador for the Heart Foundation and wants his story to make young people aware they're not immune from heart conditions.

''I can do light exercise … once we work things out with the cardiologist we can start rehab training,'' Vaea said.

''I can do a lot more exercise than I could before, before I could only do a slow walk around the block.

''I don't do weights, but I can do some jogging and go a little bit longer. The main thing is that I've just got to stay patient.''
