Hooker Robbie Abel, who has been put on stand-by, flew with the squad to New Zealand on Wednesday as co-captain Stephen Moore races the clock to overcome a corked calf muscle.

Moore didn't travel with the team but will be given extra time to prove his fitness, while lock Blake Enever is set for a comeback from a shoulder injury and James Dargaville looms as the replacement for the injured Joseph Tomane.

Larkham has broken up the travel schedule by basing the team in New Zealand's adventure capital, Queenstown, before shifting to Invercargill to play the defending champion Highlanders on Saturday.

There could more changes on the way for the Brumbies as they search for a spark and players are rotated after nine games this year.

The Brumbies are desperate to end a mid-season slump that has seen them lose three of their past five matches and surrender their place at the top of the Australian conference.

The next three weeks have emerged as a season-defining run for their Super Rugby title hopes and they're preparing to start the battle with fresh blood.

If Moore is ruled out, Josh Mann-Rea will be injected into the starting XV while Abel will join the bench for just his second Super Rugby game.

That means trading his honeymoon for a trip across the Tasman less than a week after getting married.

Abel made his debut in South Africa last month and is in the first year of his contract with the Brumbies as he attempts to establish his career.

He married partner Taila in Sydney last weekend and celebrated with more than 100 family members before getting a call from Larkham that is set to give him another chance.

"A lot of things have happened for me this year to make me realise that you've got to make the most of the smallest opportunity that comes your way," Abel said.

"The wedding was really good, I spent that time with my wife and family and now I get to spend the honeymoon with the boys.

"We knew it would be like that, it just made sense to get it done at the Mormon Temple in Sydney and just had a feed with the family.

"I like to take every moment for what it's worth, especially this year. I realise that I have to take advantage of everything that comes my way and celebrate every chance that comes my way."

The Brumbies are preparing for their biggest line-up reshuffle this season after using just 20 players in their starting XV rotation for the first eight games of the year.

But injuries and a form drop have prompted a shake-up as they search for combinations to reignite their season and get their title aspirations back on track.

The Brumbies won their first three games but have battled inconsistency since travelling to South Africa, losing to the Cape Town Stormers, the Waikato Chiefs and the Canterbury Crusaders.

Their record loss to the Crusaders last weekend saw them slip from Australia's guaranteed finals position to sixth.

Enever, who is ready to play his first game since round two, said it was up to the new players to provide an injection of excitement to end a mini slump.

"I've done everything I can to get back in shape and get the shoulder right," Enever said.

"The boys have had some tough weeks, but guys in my position have played well. Hopefully coming off the bench you can give that injection when you come on.

"It's going to be a tight game so you have to be ready to inject your fresh legs when you get tapped on the shoulder."
