ACT Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham has laid down the challenge to the club's most experienced players to stand up as leaders during pre-season training as they aim for a breakthrough title.

Sio is one of a new batch of leaders emerging in Canberra, using his Wallabies experience and five years of Super Rugby action to set an example for the next generation.

The 24-year-old front-rower also said contract negotiations would not be a distraction as he prepares for the season, with the Brumbies targeting Sio, Christian Lealiifano and David Pocock as priority signings.

"I guess I do feel like a senior guy in a way, it's all happened pretty quickly for me," Sio said.

"I've worked very hard and been very lucky to get the opportunities I've had, I'll never take that for granted. It can be a cut-throat sport at times in terms of selection and injury, you've got to take the good with the bad.

"Maybe I'd like to step into a leadership role in the tight five in the coming years if I decide to stay. I don't think you can put things on the backburner, but the 2016 season is my priority."

The Brumbies will finish their Snowy Mountains training camp on Thursday after Larkham took the squad away from Canberra to kickstart 2016.

It was the first time the entire squad had been together since captain Stephen Moore announced his decision to move to the Queensland Reds at the end of the year and Matt Toomua's impending move to England.

Larkham says the squad has pushed ongoing contract talks aside to put its focus into rugby.

He also wants players to show their leadership potential throughout the pre-season to capitalise on the international experience throughout the squad.

The Brumbies could boast up to 12 Test players in their starting line-up this year, while there are a host of players pressing their claims from the fringes.

"We're getting different guys to talk at the end of training sessions and we'll continue that so we don't have one voice, we need a number of guys contributing," Larkham said.

"The longer teams are together, the more they understand everything and they're better at leading.

"I certainly think a number of guys can step up, Scotty is one of those. We've got a number of guys who have played at Super Rugby and Test levels for a number of years now and we'll call on them."

Sio is now in his fifth Super Rugby season after arriving at the Brumbies as an unknown young gun for the 2012 season.

He has established himself as the premier loosehead prop in Australian rugby and locked down the No.1 jersey for the Wallabies' World Cup campaign.

Sio dislocated his elbow in the World Cup play-offs, but made a remarkable recovery to take his spot in the starting XV for the final against New Zealand.

He then injured his medial ligament just 10 minutes into the final, but played through pain until he was replaced in the second half.

Sio spent six weeks of his holiday in elbow and knee braces and is the only player in the Brumbies' rehabilitation group.

But rather than let it weigh him down, Sio wants to set an example for young players by maintaining a positive attitude.

"One thing I've learnt is to see the positives in everything. There are young blokes in the team who may look to me as a senior player," Sio said.

"If my attitude is down, then that can have an affect. For me it's about staying positive and building as much morale as I can. Even though I'm in rehab, I want to show the boys I want to contribute as much as I can."
