But the Brumbies will launch their own bid to plan for the future, aiming to re-sign coach Stephen Larkham and marquee man David Pocock when training ramps up in January.

Toomua has been linked with a move to England despite having a contract until the end of the 2017 Super Rugby season.

The hard-hitting flyhalf was part of the Wallabies' World Cup campaign, but saw limited game time behind Matt Giteau and Kurtley Beale.

He was spotted at a Wasps game against the Leicester Tigers a week after the World Cup final and it's understood the Coventry-based club keenly pursued his services.

Player movements and speculation is starting to heat up after the World Cup and the Brumbies will be desperately trying to ensure a host of off-contract players commit to Canberra.

Wallabies captain Stephen Moore heads a list of off-contract Brumbies, with World Cup squad members Pocock, Scott Sio, Joseph Tomane as well as Christian Lealiifano and Ben Alexander all searching for deals beyond the end of 2016.

Pocock has already been targeted by French offers and more rich clubs while Moore has indicated he will decide on his future in coming months.

But it appears Toomua may be the first to be lured from the Brumbies and ongoing links to overseas clubs will cause headaches in Canberra as Larkham focuses on winning the Super Rugby championship.

Chief executive Michael Jones has had initial talks with Larkham and the ARU about how a potential contract extension would work if the former Test playmaker wants to juggle Super Rugby and Wallabies coaching duties.

A new contract could potentially see the Brumbies lock Larkham in until the next World Cup in 2019.

Jones insists the Brumbies won't pressure star openside flanker Pocock into deciding on his future after he committed to a one-year extension for the 2016 campaign.

Jones has been working in the off-season to put plans in place for the future with Larkham at the top of the list for extending his coaching contract.

"We're absolutely keen to keep [Larkham]. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see Steve's impact on the Wallabies was one of the keys to success at the World Cup," Jones said.

"We haven't discussed it with the board but have spoken to [Larkham] and the ARU. In the new year we'll be talking to him about rolling it into a long-term arrangement. I'd like to lock him up until the next World Cup but we might not be able to arrange that."

The Brumbies were on the verge of a deal with French giants Toulon to play a pre-season trial in Singapore on February 13.

The match would have put the Brumbies' best against Toulon's all-star roster which includes Matt Giteau, Drew Mitchell, James O'Connor and Quade Cooper and a throng of the world's best.

However, Toulon was double booked for another game against the Durban Sharks and the Brumbies will now likely play the Queensland Reds in a pre-season contest.

They have also put out feelers to US and Canadian rugby about testing the waters in North America for the build-up to their Super Rugby campaign.

The Brumbies are investigating a clash against Racing Metro, but it's understood the deal would largely hinge on whether New Zealand World Cup-winner Dan Carter was a guaranteed starter.

The Brumbies are still keen to break into the Asian market, with proposals to play a mid-year match in Hong Kong during the three-week bye for Test rugby as well as a pre-season game in Singapore in 2017.

"I'm concerned about substituting another team for Toulon in terms of getting fans to the game and marketing. We've gone cold on it for the moment but we're working rapidly on our pre-season trials," Jones said.

Most of the players will start pre-season training on Friday with the squad's Wallabies representatives to be given extra leave until January 4.
