But Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham says Speight will "definitely" play his first Test for Australia this year despite his hamstring problem extending a four-year wait to be eligible to play for the Wallabies.

Speight's drawn-out eligibility saga ended on Thursday and the Fijian-born winger is available to be selected for Australia four years after he moved to Canberra.

The shattered Wallaby-in-waiting has been forced to put his Wallabies dream on hold and has spent part of this week volunteering at soup kitchens and shelters for the homeless to put his injury in perspective.

Speight has been ruled out of the next three Tests, with the "best case scenario" for a comeback in the Bledisloe Cup match against New Zealand in Brisbane on October 18.

But it is more likely Speight's Wallabies career will be delayed until the spring tour, which starts on November 1.

"Henry will definitely play for the Wallabies this year, there's absolutely no doubt about that," Larkham said.

"He had a couple of days off this week and did some volunteer work and it's good for injured guys to get away and experience a different part of life. He's come back in a very good head space.

"He has proved his work, he has shown his quality in the big games and he always delivers more. He's got a cult following in Canberra and it's not just because of his afro.

"It's because he is an unbelievable player; the Wallabies have expressed to us that they're keen to get their hands on him as soon as they can. He will be in the Test team as soon as he's ready."

Speight moved to Canberra at the end of 2010 to join the Brumbies and start his Super Rugby career.

Under IRB rules, players must live in a country for three years before being eligible for selection.

But an IRB bungle and a brief playing stint in New Zealand put Speight's Wallabies plan on hold. It forced him to wait four years.

Speight is also waiting on a decision from the Australian government to see if his brother and sister can visit him in Canberra.

The Department of Immigration has deemed Jerry and Davila Speight a risk of seeking asylum in Australia, despite assurances from Speight, the Brumbies and the ARU that they will return to Fiji.

Speight was supposed to make his comeback for the Canberra Vikings in the National Rugby Championship last week, but withdrew because of hamstring soreness.

Scans were unclear as to whether he had re-injured his hamstring, or suffered a new tear.

"The injury timeframe is undetermined at the moment, but we hope he can play a [National Rugby Championship] game for the Canberra Vikings before he goes to the Wallabies," Larkham said.

"The Bledisloe Cup match is the best-case scenario ... The scans show it's not fully healed and we want to be careful with him so he doesn't do it again."
