The AFL and NRL have blockbuster contests each Anzac Day.

After more than 30,000 people attended the dawn service at the Australian War Memorial on Thursday, chief executive Andrew Fagan said it would be fitting for the Brumbies to start rugby's involvement in the day of remembrance.

''Given Canberra is the capital and the variety of services around the city … it would be great to have a game as a regular Brumbies match against a New Zealand team on Anzac Day,'' Fagan said.

''I think it's appropriate given we're the home of the Defence Force and the War Memorial. We'll put the request into SANZAR and hopefully it can be arranged.

''It's difficult to schedule because there are three countries involved [in the competition].''

The Brumbies approached SANZAR last year about hosting an Anzac Day match this season.

But organisers were unable to finalise the travel logistics. Fagan hopes the request can be approved this year.

Anzac Day next year falls on a Friday. It would be a perfect opportunity for the Brumbies to take on any of the five New Zealand teams in the Australian capital.

The international travel and the rotating draw has made it difficult to cement fixtures in the past.

The Canberra Raiders have hosted Anzac Day matches, including a clash with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2010. Last year they swapped their green jerseys for camouflage jumpers.

SANZAR has shown a willingness to accommodate special requests.

The NSW Waratahs asked for more Sunday afternoon games and their wish was granted, while the Brumbies are trying to avoid too many home matches at night during Canberra's coldest months.

With the season only at its halfway point, work on the 2014 schedule has not started.

But Fagan hopes the competition's governing body will recognise the benefits of allowing the Brumbies to start an Anzac Day rivalry.

''I was at the dawn service this morning and there's a lot of activity that goes on in Canberra right through until lunchtime on Anzac Day,'' Fagan said on Thursday.

''But a late afternoon or early evening fixture would work really well on Anzac Day and be appropriate … it would be something Canberrans could come to respect, appreciate and enjoy.

''The challenge is trying to work it in with the draw so that it doesn't cause problems to the broader competition.''

The Brumbies will play the Western Force at Canberra Stadium on Saturday. It is a crucial match in their quest to make the finals for the first time since 2004. They will then take on the Canterbury Crusaders at home in a rare afternoon fixture on Sunday, May 5.

Fagan said the Brumbies were unlikely to chase more afternoon matches in the capital next season, but preferred a ''mixture'' of timeslots to accommodate their fans.

In their four home games this year, the Brumbies have had an average crowd of almost 16,000.
