The Brumbies are bracing for an unpredictable Benji Marshall in the former Wests Tigers star's first Australian Super Rugby appearance, but the club has ruled out a potential bidding war to sign another NRL gun, Andrew Fifita.

Alexander pointed to code-hopper Israel Folau's rugby enjoyment as the perfect example as to why players can make a successful transition to the 15-a-side game.

But after Fifita's multi-million dollar deal with the Canterbury Bulldogs was torn up on Monday and rumours started he would pursue a move to rugby, Alexander doesn't want Super Rugby used as a cash trade-off.

"I'm all for [NRL converts] if they want to come to rugby to enjoy it," said 62-Test front-rower Alexander.

"Bringing blokes from different skill sets makes rugby great, if they want to come we'll have anyone if they come for the right reasons.

"They can't be using rugby as a trade off against league for cash. You can see Izzy is enjoying it, training his backside off and money isn't his motivation. His motivation is being the best athlete he could be and we couldn't be happier to have him."

Wests Tigers premiership-winner Marshal shocked the NRL when he quit rugby league last year to start a new challenge in rugby union with the Auckland Bluies.

Marshall will play his first official Super Rugby game in Australia when the Blues take on the Brumbies at Canberra Stadium on Friday night.

It's a venue Marshall has never lost at, winning all six games against the Canberra Raiders when he was with the Tigers.

Brumbies coach and one of the Wallabies' greatest playmakers Stephen Larkham believes Marshall has the skills required to be a rugby star.

"He's getting there ... he certainly has the skills in attack, but I think defensively is the biggest issue for him," Larkham said.

"Whether he's in the right position has been the issue ... he's a very skilful player and his background in league has set him up well to be a playmaker in union.

"But there are a lot of technical elements and it's just about getting his head around that, it's similar to [NSW Waratahs and Wallabies fullback] Israel Folau when he came over."

The Brumbies won't be drawn into a contract fight to sign Fifita, with director of rugby, Laurie Fisher, declaring "we would need another $500,000 in our salary cap" before considering the Cronulla prop as a recruit.

The Brumbies are locked in contract negotiations with several stars – including Matt Toomua, Nic White, Christian Lealiifano and Scott Fardy – who are searching for new deals at the end of the season.

The club hopes it will be able to finalise new contracts in the coming months to keep the squad together, but Fifita is not on the radar.

Fifita is a former Brumbies Academy player and the Brumbies have a back-row contract up for grabs for next year with skipper Ben Mowen departing to play in France.

"Perhaps if they increased our salary cap by half a million [dollars we'd consider it], but unless that happens, no," grinned Brumbies director of rugby Laurie Fisher when asked if the club was interested in Fifita.

"I don't know [if he could make the transition], I've seen him play one game of rugby league. He's obviously a very good rugby league player, but I can't comment.

"You want guys playing rugby who want to play rugby, not guys who just want to earn money."
