Coleman has added 10 kilograms to his frame in the off-season as he tries to find more power to complement his blistering speed.

The Queanbeyan junior also hopes ankle surgery has finally fixed his "wooden foot" and will allow him to run without pain for the first time since round two last season.

Coleman and the Brumbies are back in training to lay the foundations for the 2016 Super Rugby campaign, with athletic performance director Ben Serpell calling in a sprint guru to assist with early pre-season work.

For Coleman, it's about finding a way to keep his speed at the same time as being stronger.

He started last season weighing in at 82 kilograms but turned up for day one of pre-season training at 91 kilograms.

"This my ninth pre-season now and every year I've come in at 82 kilos and had to try to put on a few but keep lean too," Coleman said.

"I think that caused a lot of my niggle injuries as well. I don't know if 91 kilos is where I want to be at the start of the season, but I've got a few kilos to shred naturally over the course of a pretty tough pre-season.

"My speed feels quicker than it ever has and after having the ankle done, I can feel it coming back."

Coleman has pushed aside an Olympic Games dream in sevens rugby to focus solely on the Brumbies and winning a Super Rugby title.

Coleman turned down interest from the NRL and a chance to chase an Olympic berth to re-sign with the Brumbies until the end of 2017.

The 25-year-old is still open to the idea of joining the Australian team in Rio if officials want him, but he said his goal was to "finally want to be able to show what I can do and know I can do."

He had floating bone pieces removed from ligaments in his ankle and cartilage repaired after carrying the problem through almost all of last season.

"I forgot how good it felt to run with two proper working ankles ... it feels really good. I had no movement [in my ankle], it was basically like a piece of wood," Coleman said.

"It wasn't ideal. We timed a few cortisone injections where we could ... we did everything we could. The last three years it's been niggle to niggle. [Coach Stephen Larkham] gave me a chance to have a real rest and work on everything that was niggling me."

Wallabies World Cup squad member Sam Carter was a surprise addition to the first real pre-season hit-out on Monday, with the club's Test contingent not due back at training until January 4.

Coaches have started to integrate new players including teenage playmaker Nick Jooste, centre Andrew Smith and Australian sevens representative Michael Wells.

"I think we did a 45-minute [contact] session and that's about as much contact as I did in a year in sevens," said back-rower Wells.

"I'm happy with the opportunity I've been given and hopefully I can take it and run with it.

"Sevens was great but I always saw myself as [a 15-a-side] player. It's a trial by fire and we'll hit the ground running.

"I probably have to put a bit more weight on ... I've got to get used to getting bashed up again."
