Edwards has been in the role for eight months as an interim chief executive but Brumbies chairman Sean Hammond said his permanent appointment would give the club stability.

The Brumbies' board has endorsed former Prime television boss Edwards' role and his No.1 goal is to end a four-year run of financial losses.

The Brumbies will report a loss again this year with figures to be finalised in the coming months.

The Brumbies are also searching for a major sponsor, worth about $1 million a season, with uncertainty surrounding the University of Canberra's future as naming-rights partner.

"The main thing I want to do is make this business financially secure," Edwards said.

"It's a struggle in a city the size of Canberra ... corporate activity is limited. My job is to work with the commercial team to find new opportunities.

"We'll report a loss again this year, it's not generally trading results. Our gates were down a bit, but we didn't budget for an increase, it's just pieces and chunks.

"I'm pretty confident we can turn it around and that will be my target over the next couple of years. This year we'll realise some issues that have been ongoing and we'll get a clean slate."

Edwards has been on the Brumbies board for 10 years. However, he will step down from the position to focus on his role as chief executive.

Long-term Brumbies chief executive Andrew Fagan quit the role last year.

Uncertainty about the Australian Super Rugby structure affected the Brumbies' ability to find a successor, and Edwards stepped in as interim boss.

Edwards is also a part-owner in a multimillion-dollar scrap-booking company in Queensland.

The University of Canberra has been the Brumbies' naming-rights partner for three seasons, but it is unclear whether it will continue its commitment.

"UC haven't said no, but we're in the market for a naming-rights sponsor," Edwards said.

"We're looking around right now and we can't leave it too late to lock something up.

“Like any sporting organisation, we’ve had ups and downs over the last year or so and I’ve enjoyed seeing us come through the other side to feature in five play-off games in two years."

Edwards has been working with coach Stephen Larkham over the past week to start building a roster for 2016 and beyond.

Players Stephen Moore, David Pocock, Pat McCabe and Ben Alexander are off contract at the end of next year.

The biggest challenge is juggling 14 Wallabies players inside a $5 million salary cap while aiming to break a 10-year championship drought.

The Brumbies have only a handful of spots up for grabs for their next roster, with Larkham to cast his eye over the new National Rugby Championship talent before finalising his playing group.

Hammond said: “Doug started with the Brumbies at a difficult time. It was the beginning of a new season, we were in the middle of moving offices, and the majority of our playing squad was off contract.

“I’ve been impressed with the way he navigated the club through that period. As a club, we are now far more stable, with 10 Wallabies re-signing and the new facility open and fully operational."

Edwards will continue to oversee his scrap-booking business from Canberra. The online craft business boasts an annual turnover of more than $5 million.

"I was open to whatever the Brumbies board wanted to do," Edwards said.
