Fardy's decision to have one more crack has him preparing for the biggest month of his life as the Brumbies play for a Super Rugby title and he joins the Wallabies for the first time.

The Brumbies play the Waikato Chiefs in Hamilton on Saturday night. For Fardy it's another massive moment just days after he was a surprise inclusion in Ewen McKenzie's Wallabies squad.

No one was as shocked as Fardy and he had to turn his phone off at 2am in South Africa because the calls and text messages kept waking roommate Clyde Rathbone.

But the down-to-earth hard-working forward is refusing to get caught up in the excitement.

''It's been a crazy 18 months, but I've really enjoyed it,'' Fardy said. ''I'm lucky to be playing with the Brumbies, I'm genuinely happy and appreciate every time I get a game with the Brumbies.

''You know when your phone is ringing hot that it's special to get in a Wallabies squad, but there's a long way to get that gold jersey.

''I hadn't played Super Rugby until last year, I could have played 100 games by now if I got that chance early in my career but I never got on the field. I was just lucky I got there eventually.''

Fardy has been integral to the Brumbies' revival. He epitomises the squad's rise from a group of unknown and unheralded players to the best team in Australia and within one game of the Super Rugby championship.

The Brumbies fly to New Zealand on Thursday to prepare for the final.

When the game is over, Fardy will front for Wallabies duties as part of a 12-strong Brumbies contingent in McKenzie's first squad as coach.

Fardy isn't a flamboyant crowd pleaser. He's the teammate who does the dirty work and is willing to put his body on the line.

Before he joined the Brumbies, Fardy was toiling away in Japan for the Kamaishi Seawaves and the village he lived in was destroyed by the tsunami in 2011.

He had been passed up by the Western Force and NSW Waratahs, but Brumbies coach Jake White decided he was the perfect fit for rebuilding the Canberra club.

At 29, he's a veteran in a team of young stars. But that doesn't faze Fardy.

''I don't know what I would have done if I had have finished up,'' he said. ''I would have looked seriously at giving the game away … but I knew I was lucky that I still had a job in Japan, and you've got to be grateful for what you're getting.''

Skipper Ben Mowen has been a big backer of Fardy and his inclusion in the Wallabies squad and said the young ACT players could handle Test rugby.

Fardy and Tevita Kuridrani were the bolters in the Wallabies squad joined by uncapped trip Scott Sio, Matt Toomua and Nic White.

''I'm unbelievably proud of this group. The beauty of a side like this is if one bloke misses a tackle, the next guy makes it. If someone makes a mistake, the next guy lifts him up,'' Mowen said.

''There's an awesome friendship that underpins everything you do, you can't win the big moments unless you're absolutely prepared to put it on the line for your mates.''
