The Brumbies' newest recruit arrived in Canberra on Sunday night to settle into his new life before he throws himself into his first Super Rugby campaign.

A five-hour meeting with Brumbies coach Stephen Larkham at Sydney airport sealed the deal and the pair put international rivalries on hold during the World Cup to finalise the deal.

Maradona delivered an inspirational speech to the Pumas and then danced and sung with the players in the changerooms at the World Cup in England.

Moving to Canberra is a world away from the sporting passion in Argentina, but Cubelli, 26, hopes he can forge his own path to develop his game.

Cubelli decided to walk away from Argentina's inaugural Super Rugby side to pursue an opportunity to sign with the Brumbies and replace Nic White.

The Argentina World Cup scrumhalf grew up watching Stephen Larkham and George Gregan dominate for the Brumbies and Wallabies.

And his first meeting with Larkham at the airport in the middle of the year convinced him stepping out of his comfort zone and moving to Canberra was the right move.

"It's like a dream for me to be here. It seems like a big family here and I am proud to be a part of it," Cubelli said.

"I see it as a great opportunity. The Brumbies are a team with a lot of history, it's a big opportunity to improve my rugby and as a human being. I think it was time to look at my rugby first and I'm very, very happy to be here."

Cubelli's arrival is a major boost for the Brumbies as the club launches its plan to re-sign Christian Lealiifano, Stephen Moore and David Pocock beyond the end of the 2016 campaign.

Cubelli's contract is the first time the club has used its marquee foreign player option to recruit a big-name international player.

He used a get-out clause in his deal with the Argentina union to take his skills abroad and link with the Brumbies.

That doesn't mean his pride in the Pumas jersey is any less, and he admits losing to Australia in the World Cup semi-final still stings less than two months after Maradona sat in the stands.

"We are a young team in Argentina, we can learn a lot from the World Cup," Cubelli said.

"When I made my first jump to the Pumas I grew a lot. I will try to do the same here and take advantage and learn from the players that are here. Argentina rugby is very passionate. Now that we're in Super Rugby Argentina will get even better. I have [Argentina passion] in my bag so hopefully I can bring that to the Brumbies."

The 45-Test No.9 was in Canberra a year ago but went largely unnoticed as he ran out in the Pacific Nations Cup for the Argentina Pampas XV.

Cubelli said trying to take the reins from White and follow in Gregan's footsteps was a "challenge".

"I want to give something to this jersey, I am grateful to be given this opportunity," he said.

Cubelli's father Alejandro also played for Argentina and rugby is a family tradition.

Playing in Australia will be a giant leap from the amateur club ranks of his homeland and admits he will be torn between Brumbies and Argentina allegiances should the teams meet in the Super Rugby finals.

"I have to take advantage of having [Larkham] as a coach, it's one of the things that made me make this decision, being at the right place with the right people to improve your rugby," Cubelli said.

An initial passport error led to a delay in his visa after officials incorrectly entered his details and registered him as a woman.

He is now free to work with the Brumbies and will start pre-season next month when the club's World Cup Wallabies return to training in the first week of 2016.
