Gregan is now free to resume his coaching role in Canberra after he was one of three ARU board members who quit on Tuesday.

It is understood he will pursue business and coaching interests in Australia.

Gregan's former teammate, Stephen Larkham, says recruiting the champion Brumbies and Wallabies No.9 would be ''ideal'' as the ACT aims for a drought-breaking championship.

Former Test captain Gregan was forced to cut ties with the Brumbies in April when the ARU adopted a new independent board structure. But Gregan told The Canberra Times he would consider joining White's coaching structure again.

''I'd be available to come back and do stuff if Jake wanted me to do so,'' Gregan said. ''I really enjoyed doing the consultant coaching and I guess it's for discussion at another time with Jake.''

White made Gregan one of his first appointments when he took over the reins at the end of 2011.

The two-time Super Rugby winner and World Cup champion travelled to Canberra on a regular basis to work with scrum-halves Nic White and Ian Prior.

His guidance has helped White transform from club rugby player into a Wallabies No.9.

White is in South Africa on holidays after leading the team into the Super Rugby final, which the Brumbies lost to the Waikato Chiefs earlier this month.

Coach White started his tenure with Laurie Fisher (forwards) and Larkham (backs) as his full-time assistants, while Gregan and Eddie Jones acted on a consultant basis. Fisher and Larkham have re-signed in their respective roles.

White also tried to lure NRL premiership winner Danny Buderus to the club as a tackling consultant before rugby officials blocked the move.

Former NRL coach Brian Smith then filled the role meant for Buderus, but it remains unclear whether Smith will do the same job next season.

Larkham arrived back in Canberra on Tuesday after leading the Brumbies to the inaugural world club sevens title and going on a fact-finding mission at European clubs. Larkham said Gregan would be the perfect addition to the Brumbies staff as they chase their first title since 2004.

''It would be ideal to have him back. He sees things differently to me, we see it from opposite sides,'' Larkham said. ''Because he came down intermittently, he saw the way we were playing from an independent position so he offered some really good advice into what we were doing and how we were doing it.''

The Brumbies are still finalising their roster for the 2014 campaign.

There is only a handful of full-time and extended player squad contracts available, with the Brumbies putting faith in the squad that unexpectedly lifted them into the grand final this year.
