Henry Speight named in Wallabies squad for Rugby Championship

Rampaging Brumbies winger Henry Speight is the only new name in the Wallabies squad to play in the Rugby Championship next month.

The Fijian-born 26-year-old will not be eligible to help break Australia's 12-year Bledisloe Cup drought and will have to wait until the Wallabies' Test against Argentina on the Gold Coast in September before he can pull on a gold jersey.

But Speight's inclusion along side 10 other Brumbies players in the 32-man squad caps a drawn-out process of delicate negotiations with the International Rugby Board over the winger's eligibility.

Born and raised in Fiji, Speight's short stint playing for Waikato in New Zealand's ITM Cup disrupted his four-season stint with the Brumbies and delayed his Test eligibility.

He will have reached the IRB's 36-month threshold on September 11, in time for the back end of the Rugby Championship and the Wallabies' third Test against the All Blacks in October.

Queensland halfback Will Genia joined a long list of top-level players ruled out of contention due to injury, but the Wallabies are hopeful he will join the squad mid-way through the Championship. Nick Phipps, Nic White and Luke Burgess were named as the squad's three halbacks in his absence.

There were few surprises elsewhere, with Kurtley Beale and Bernard Foley named again as McKenzie's five-eighth options and Brumbies playmaking duo Matt Toomua and Christian Leali'ifano named as centres alongside ACT teammate Tevita Kuridrani.

Reds second rower and former captain James Horwill was named alongside Rob Simmons in the second row, alongside Test rookies Will Skelton (NSW) and Sam Carter (ACT).

NSW flanker Michael Hooper will once again captain the Test side after taking over from the injured Stephen Moore early in the Wallabies' three-Test series against France last month.

SQUAD: Ben Alexander, Pek Cowan, Sekope Kepu, Scott Sio, James Slipper, Nathan Charles, James Hanson, Tatafu Polota-Nau, Sam Carter, James Horwill, Rob Simmons, Will Skelton, Scott Fardy, Scott Higginbotham, Matt Hodgson, Michael Hooper, Ben McCalman, Wycliff Palu, Luke Burgess, Nick Phipps, Nic White, Kurtley Beale, Bernard Foley, Tevita Kuridrani, Christian Leali’ifano, Matt Toomua, Adam Ashley-Cooper, Henry Speight, Israel Folau, Rob Horne, Pat McCabe, Joe Tomane.
