Speight's frustrating hamstring strain has put his Test ambitions on the back burner for at least three more weeks as he stays in Canberra to do rehabilitation instead of making his Wallabies debut against Argentina on Saturday.

Wallabies playmaker Christian Lealiifano described Speight as "the best winger in the world" and was adamant the Fijian-born 26-year-old could be parachuted straight into the Test set up.

Brumbies teammate Joseph Tomane will join the Wallabies on the Gold Coast after making his comeback from injury for the Canberra Vikings in the National Rugby Championship.

Speight's four year battle with the International Rugby Board will end on Thursday.

The injury is a cruel blow to a Wallabies wait which started in December 2010 and it's likely Speight won't be available to play until the next Test against South Africa on September 27.

"It's very frustrating for Henry, and I feel for him, he's so close," Lealiifano said.

"I think he's the best winger in the world and can slot straight into the Wallabies. He's such a powerful athlete ... and he can slot in straight from rehab.

"We'll all be very relieved and happy for him ... it's just a countdown for him now. He can create something from nothing and does everything."

Test coach Ewen McKenzie has called up Tomane and scrumhalf Will Genia, but said he did not want to rush Speight's international rugby initiation.

"The comeback trail has been pretty seamless, but he literally woke up sore," McKenzie said.

"I've seen the scans, it's certainly not dramatic, but the fact that it's there – you'd call it a strain – you're going to be conservative.

"I'm not interested in creating some sort of chronic issue."

Tomane had a mixed comeback for the Vikings, playing 54 minutes in his first game in more than a month.

Lealiifano started to rebuild confidence with a strong performance at flyhalf, reminding McKenzie he's ready for an opportunity if called on in the Wallabies squad.

Lealiifano is desperate for game time to help him find rhythm and form after an up and down season.

The Vikings relieved him of goal-kicking duties to ease any extra pressure, and it worked, with the 26-year-old leading from the front with some crunching tackles and promising runs.

"I really enjoyed it. I felt like getting in one closer [at flyhalf] and taking a bit more control, which I really enjoy," Lealiifano said.

"I'll just keep progressing from there ... If you touch the ball more, you can create and get your hands on it.

"I was blowing out the cobwebs, in a sense, to try to get some confidence back, and I had a lot of fun [in the NRC]."

Speight has been in international limbo for more than a year following the IRB's decision that he was not eligible for Wallabies selection because of a brief playing stint in New Zealand at the end of 2011.

IRB rules state players must live in a country for three years before being eligible to play a Test. Speight moved to Canberra at the end of 2010 but played for Waikato in New Zealand after the 2011 Super Rugby season.

His three-month stint in New Zealand led the IRB to add an extra 12 months to his Wallabies wait.

Tomane has been plagued by a Wallabies injury curse since making a successful code swap from the NRL three years ago.

He was on the cusp of Test selection to play the All Blacks last month before he tore his hamstring at Wallabies training.
