He's the Super Rugby leading try scorer, and in his third season in Canberra, but Speight said he could not dwell on missing a chance to take on the Lions.

Fijian-born Speight will have to wait until the end of October before the International Rugby Board clears him as an Australian resident and he is eligible for the Wallabies.

Making things more frustrating is Speight is classified as an Australian resident. But because he played for Waikato in the New Zealand provincial competition at the end of 2010, he has to wait until he has been in Australia for three years before being in contention for a Wallabies spot.

It means he'll miss out on the three-Test Lions tour in June and July as well as the Rugby Championship.

However, should his form continue, Speight would be available to be picked as a Wallaby for the spring tour of Europe.

The 25-year-old has scored seven tries this year and is widely regarded as the in-form Australian winger.

''It's a little bit [frustrating to miss the Lions tour] but it is something beyond my control. So to dwell on it would only cause more frustration,'' Speight said.

''But it's been over 2½ years and, if I have to wait a few more months, it won't kill me.

''The thing I'm happy about is that the Brumbies are still playing the Lions, so I can still say I've played them.''

It will be Speight's only crack at the Lions, as the next time they grace Australia's shores will be in 2025, when he is 37.

''All I know is that I'm not eligible for the Lions or for the Rugby Championship, too,'' he said. ''I don't want to dwell on it too much because if I think about it too much then it might probably affect the way I'm playing for the Brumbies.''

Speight has been a mainstay in the Brumbies' back line in the past two seasons. His lightning speed and ability to break the line will make him a Wallabies contender.

Brumbies backs coach and former Test fly-half Stephen Larkham said Speight deserved a shot at chasing a gold jumper. The winger had an opportunity to train with the Fiji national team in the off-season - the country he represented as a junior before moving to New Zealand. But he turned down the chance to ensure it did not affect his Wallabies dream.

Brumbies coach Jake White will name his team on Friday to take on the Canterbury Crusaders at Canberra Stadium.

The back line was on fire last weekend, securing a four-try bonus point before half-time in a 41-7 demolition of the Western Force.

Speight scored a first-half double while fullback Jesse Mogg and winger Joseph Tomane also got across the line. Mogg and Tomane are considered contenders for Wallabies spots for the Lions tour and Speight said their rise to the top was driving him to an Australian call-up.
