Tomane was overwhelmed with emotions and "a calmness" when he was baptised this week, admitting to tears as he watched one of his close friends go before him. He was joined by 20 others.

The Wallabies speedster will attempt to reignite his season against the Stormers on Saturday night when he returns from a foot injury that kept him out of action for a month.

But Tomane said his competitive instinct will kick in at Canberra Stadium despite revealing he is "slow to anger" after being baptised at the Life Unlimited Church in Charnwood on Sunday.

"I can't explain the feelings and emotions ... seeing my friend get baptised, I just felt a sense of joy and I started crying," Tomane said.

"When they talk about baptism, they say when you go under the water, that's your old life gone and you're coming out receiving your new life with Jesus, that's exactly what I felt.

"This whole week I've felt like a completely different person. I'm slow to anger, I've never been happier and I felt a sense of change and a calmness.

"But come Saturday, I'm naturally competitive. I play hard and I go out to win."

Tomane credits his Christian faith for helping turn around his career.

When he was playing reserve grade rugby league in Queensland three years ago, Tomane made a deal with God to get his life and career back on track.

Less than a year later, he was starring for the Brumbies and got a call-up to make his Wallabies debut.

He goes to church every week, prays before matches, has tattoos of his favourite bible verses, and pauses to thank God every time he scores a try.

Tomane hopes to set up a Christian group for athletes in Canberra and wants professional and amateur players from various sports to get in touch.

The 24-year-old was also baptised as a child but said he could not help but cry when going through the experience as an adult.

"My mate was in front of me ... I was taking deep breaths and I can't explain what I felt. When my friend got baptised and knowing I was next, that's when everything just came out," Tomane said.

"Tears, everything ... it's probably the only time you're happy to cry. When I was a baby I didn't know the difference between right and wrong or how to make the right choices.

"Getting baptised again was my public declaration of being a follower of Jesus. One thing I learnt is that we receive will from God. It has opened my eyes."

The powerful winger, who has played nine Tests for Australia, will switch to the right side of the Brumbies' attack to replace Henry Speight.

Speight broke his jaw in two places and had his second operation in less than a week on Thursday.

Tomane hopes he can help re-energise the Brumbies' after a brutal game against the Waratahs this week which increased the club's injury list to eight stars.

Tomane has scored eight tries in his 31 Super Rugby games after quitting the NRL in 2011 to join the Brumbies.

"In a way I'm restarting my season, it was disappointing to get an injury and that I didn't get a chance to build on the work I did on the [Wallabies] spring tour last year," Tomane said.

"It's a fresh start, I've done a lot of hard work and I'll do the best I can to help keep the team momentum going."

Brumbies director of rugby Laurie Fisher said Tomane's inclusion was a boost.

"It's good to welcome a Wallaby back. With Henry out, Joey is a pretty capable replacement," Fisher said.
