The Wallabies have suffered another major injury blow with Rebels utility Kurtley Beale ruled of the four Tests in June against Scotland and Wales.

He joins Wallabies captain James Horwill as the other major casualty following week 14 of Super Rugby.

Beale requires surgery on the shoulder he injured in the Rebels' 66-24 loss to the Hurricanes on Saturday.

He is the third playmaker to be ruled out of contention following injuries to Rebels teammate James O'Connor (lacerated liver) and Brumbies five-eighth Christian Lealiifano (dislocated knee).

Waratahs playmaker Berrick Barnes and Quade Cooper of the Reds are the likely contenders for the starting berth in the No.10 jumper. Cooper has played just two Super Rugby games after returning from a knee reconstruction.

‘‘Kurtley had an appointment this morning with a specialist. He’s going to require an operation,’’ coach Robbie Deans told reporters at the Wallabies training camp in Sydney.

The full extent of the damage to his shoulder wouldn’t be known until the surgery.

‘‘But the fact that he needs an operation is indicative of the fact that it is serious and it will rule him out of the June (Test) window.’’

Deans isn’t ready to announce his replacement captain in the absence of Horwill.

However, breakaway star David Pocock will be strongly favoured for the role in all four Tests, having already been tipped to captain the Wallabies in the Scotland Test in Newcastle on Tuesday week.

Halfback Will Genia is the other obvious contender.

Deans revealed Horwill’s injury wasn’t as bad as the coach initially feared when he saw the Reds skipper’s leg hyper-extended when trapped at a breakdown.

‘‘James, we are presuming, is out for the whole of June but it is not as bad as it first looked. It looked pretty sinister,’’ said Deans.

What a round for everyone: as they say, it's been emotional

The latest round revolved around conflicting emotions and, with it, the intrigue of a Wallabies squad announcement. Players, officials and rugby heavies everywhere were juggling how they felt. The ever-changing state of mind included:

Test break will reveal Super management skills

"We're just going to take it one week at a time, mate.” It's the oldest of adages in sport – cliched, yes, but also relevant, although perhaps not as relevant as it used to be with the Reds and Force signing off for four weeks' break from Super Rugby and the Brumbies, Rebels and Waratahs taking three after next weekend.

Waratahs' follies in another one-point defeat puts greater pressure on Foley's grip on the top job

THE Waratahs are in crisis following the most exasperating and brain-dead of losses in South Africa where, for the third time this season, they fell just one point short of their opponents. This was also their fifth consecutive loss.

Coach just concentrating on keeping Tahs motivated

WARATAHS coach Michael Foley did not want to talk about his future in the wake of a fifth straight Super Rugby loss over the weekend.
