The Canberra Times understands Hand will make a decision on his future this week.

He has been negotiating with three clubs, including one in France and one in Ireland, and wants to secure a deal by the end of the week.

The 43-cap veteran has been starved of game time this season.

After playing every game of the past three season for the Brumbies, the second-rower's only appearance in the opening six games this year was against the Free State Cheetahs in round three.

First-year locks Sam Carter and Leon Power have been given a chance to establish themselves in the starting XV, with Scott Fardy as back-up on the bench.

The trio has impressed so far and repaid the faith coach Jake White has shown in them.

But uncertain about his future and off contract at the end of the season, Hand has decided a return to Europe is the best move for his career.

If Hand signs an overseas deal, he would remain in the capital for the rest of the Brumbies' campaign.

It is likely the 29-year-old will finish his career overseas, but it is understood he has not shut the door on a possible return to Super Rugby.

Hand joined the Brumbies at the start of the 2009 season after a stint with Rugby Calvisano in Italy where he won the Super 10 title.

He has always been keen to return to European rugby, and a lack of game time and the desire to look after his young family played a role in his decision to field overseas offers.

News of Hand's impending departure comes as White waits on decisions from some of his other off-contract players about whether they will re-sign with the Brumbies.

There are only a handful of the Brumbies' top 30 players off contract at the end of the year.

White's preference is to keep his young squad together and continue its development.

Flyhalf Matt Toomua was on the verge signing a new deal before he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament two weeks ago.

Toomua will have surgery this week before starting his nine-month recovery and he is still keen to re-sign with the Brumbies.

Christian Lealiifano has been offered a three-year deal and White has also spoken to winger Henry Speight about a new contract.

Fijian Speight said he was keen to stay in Canberra and continue his development under White.

Speight joined the Brumbies at the start of last season and has cemented his place on the wing.

''I'm just leaving it to the Brumbies and my manager to hopefully come to an agreement,'' Speight said.

''I want to be loyal to the Brumbies for giving me the opportunity.

''I am proud to play in Canberra and I just want to repay the Brumbies.''

The Brumbies will be aiming to end a two-game losing run when they play the Melbourne Rebels at Canberra Stadium on Saturday night.
