McKenzie keen to test Tahs' new game plan

THE stodgy Waratahs of seasons past seem to have been put on the shelf under new coach Michael Cheika and marquee recruit Israel Folau, who it is hoped can inspire NSW to a new era of attacking rugby.

Enterprising trial form has given fans fresh hope that the Waratahs will be more liberal with their play and take some chances with the ball this year, with Folau as the back-line ace up their sleeve.

But before the grudge match between the Reds and Waratahs at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night, Queensland coach Ewen McKenzie is wondering whether old habits will die hard for the men in blue.

"The question will be how indoctrinated they are to their new style" ... Ewen McKenzie.

And he intends to find out whether NSW will follow through on their plans for a more open game or default to a forward-driven assault on the Reds' line.

NSW will play their first Super Rugby game of the season on Saturday while the Reds are one game into their campaign, losing to the Brumbies in a highly physical contest that left its share of bumps and bruises. The question remains as to whether the Reds will benefit from a match at Super Rugby intensity, or whether a fresher NSW can click in their first meaningful game of the year.

''Some of those guys have come in last week for their first game. The question will be how indoctrinated they are to their new style or do they fall back to old habits under pressure. That's certainly something we're interested in finding out,'' McKenzie said.

''They might play driving mauls off lineouts all day. It's been done before. They might do that. He's [Cheika] coached in Europe. As much as there is a story to tell, he could be wonderfully pragmatic under the circumstances.''

The Waratahs will have a significant weight advantage in the set pieces, prompting McKenzie to draft in Ed O'Donaghue in place of Adam Wallace-Harrison. You do not take a knife to a gunfight, hence the call for increased bulk in the Queensland scrum.

The 30-year-old, who played 21 matches for the Reds in 2007-08 before making a name overseas, is tasked with bringing some mongrel to a pack missing James Horwill (ankle) and Rebels recruit Scott Higginbotham.

Even though McKenzie has upsized, he believes his forwards have the ability to get around the paddock, something the massive Waratah pack could potentially find problematic if they are to follow through on plans to make the ball sing.

''We're playing the Wallaby forward pack, basically. It's a massive one at that. If you're going to go to a gun fight, you've got to take the right weapons,'' McKenzie said.

''The interesting thing will be that they are playing a different style of football. There are parts of the game that are very technical. Body weight is useful. It's not so useful if you are running around the park.

''The Waratahs are promoting a brand of football where they are going to move around, so they've got to support their own attack. It will be a busy day.''

Queensland's only other change was to the back line, with teenager Chris F'Sautia to start in place of Aidan Toua.

Burgess return gets White over the line

A hovering former Wallaby can do wonders for contract negotiations. Brumbies halfback Nic White has told the franchise he will re-sign after a long period stalling on a new deal. News of Luke Burgess's potential return to Australian shores, coupled with Brumbies coach Jake White's publicly expressed interest in the Toulouse No.9, probably played a part in that. As for the other off-contract halfback, Melbourne's Nick Phipps, there's been no movement. Phipps was the direct beneficiary of Burgess's move to France at the end of 2011 and we hear he is still holding out for a little something more.
