The Brumbies are out to stop a worrying trend of inconsistent form when they play the Auckland Blues at Eden Park on Saturday night.

For the past two months the Brumbies have struggled to hit top gear and they're trying to avoid a third straight loss for the first time of the new generation.

The preparation week has been dominated by players selected in the Wallabies squad for the British and Irish Lions and the cross-Tasman redemption mission to make amends for the way the Blues crushed the Brumbies last year.

But Mowen says a ''mature week'' of training has the Brumbies poised to recapture their best.

''It's about revisiting old themes this week and refocusing, our point of difference has always been the amount of detail we put in and this week we've gone back to that,'' Mowen said.

''One loss is bad enough, two [in a row] is not where you want to be and I don't even want to think about three at this stage.''

The Brumbies won't be short on motivation this week. Five players - Mowen, Christian Lealiifano, Joseph Tomane, Ben Alexander and Stephen Moore - were picked in the Wallabies' squad for the British and Irish Lions series.

A host of others, including Jesse Mogg, Nic White, Scott Sio and Peter Kimlin, have two games to push their cases to be in the extended squad.

And if that wasn't enough, the Brumbies are taking on the Blues - the team that ended their finals dream last season with a crushing last-round defeat.

Mowen said the Brumbies were guilty of waiting for things to happen in their loss to the Waratahs last weekend. The Brumbies still sit at the top of the Australian conference and have lost just three games this season. But after starting the year with four consecutive wins, they haven't been able to reach their peak in recent weeks.

Coach Jake White is sticking by his squad, making just two injury-forced changes this week. Colby Faingaa replaces George Smith, while Clyde Rathbone joins the bench for Pat McCabe.

''Guys have been in the right frame of mind this week … we know it's a small margin and we have to get it right,'' Mowen said.

''Last week was a reminder that even when you feel in control of the game, you've got to keep making things happen.''

■ Five Brumbies have been included in the initial 43-man combined Country squad to play the Lions in Newcastle on June 6. Sam Carter, Fotu Auelua, Tom Cox, Josh Mann-Rae and Dan Palmer were among 18 Super Rugby players named in the squad, which will be cut to 23 on May 31.
