The ACT Brumbies star says he won't risk his health to make a comeback.

McCabe has been ruled out of training and playing for the rest of the year, which includes the Brumbies' Super Rugby finals campaign, after he fractured his neck while playing for the Wallabies last weekend.

Brumbies coach Jake White is confident McCabe will be fit for pre-season training next year.

The inside centre will spend the next six weeks in a neck brace. He aims to return to the field next season.

It is the second time McCabe has broken his neck since November.

Wallabies doctors say McCabe can make a comeback and the fracture will heal, but the 25-year-old faces an agonising decision between risking further injury that could ruin his livelihood or walking away from the game at the peak of his powers.

McCabe contemplated retirement when he fractured the C1 vertebra in a Test against France on the Wallabies' spring tour of Europe last year.

''It's encouraging to hear the specialists being positive both about the recovery process, but also the possibility that I could be able to return to the playing field,'' McCabe said.

''It is human nature to think the worst, but I'm in good hands medically. We'll see how the rehabilitation goes and take it from there. I'd obviously like to get back into it, but I'll be taking no chances with my health either. Hopefully things will go to plan, I'm pretty confident they will. I think I've got plenty of games left in me.

''For now, I'll be concentrating on getting the recovery right while supporting both the Wallabies and Brumbies as much as I can.''

McCabe's comeback has been beset with hamstring and knee injuries and he has been limited to just eight games this season.

In his return to the Wallabies against the British and Irish Lions last weekend, McCabe went down in pain in the second half.

He met specialists in Sydney on Tuesday and another fracture prematurely ended his year.

The Brumbies had hoped he would play a major role in the Super Rugby finals campaign.

But coach White said the ''Brumbies family'' would rally around to help McCabe through his rehabilitation.

McCabe has re-signed with the Brumbies and the ARU until the end of 2015.

White said the Brumbies would not risk McCabe's health just to get him on the field next year.

''It's sad,'' White said. ''We have to look after his interests. He must be as frustrated as anyone. Every time he gets back on the field something goes wrong, you've got to feel for him.''

Wallabies doctor Warren McDonald was confident McCabe would make a full recovery.
