Speight has been left out of Australia's final roster for the Olympic qualifiers in Auckland, which starts on Saturday, with coach Tim Walsh opting to stick with sevens specialists.

ACT Brumbies flyer Speight has been in camp for the past week to try to fast-track his development in the shorter-version of the game as he juggles Super Rugby duties and Olympic aspirations.

Mercurial Wallabies playmaker Quade Cooper is also expected to join the Olympic push while Israel Folau and Bernard Foley loom as attractive targets, with experienced sevens players facing a fight for selection.

But Canberra junior Cusack says Speight's arrival didn't cause division and there's a "we're all in this together" mentality as Australia fights to keep its Olympic dream alive.

"We are all under the same umbrella with the Australian Rugby Union and to have someone of [Speight's] calibre that we're able to learn off, a lot of the players are in the learning stages and looking to evolve," Cusack said.

"We bring things to the table that he might not know about sevens and he does the same in reverse.

"We complement each other I guess. By all means, whoever [Wallabies players] want to come over to sevens then we'll welcome then with open arms.

"In previous years it's been found out that it's preferable that guys coming over have chances to perform and get used to the platform. It would be hard to come over and go straight to the Olympics, I think that's unrealistic.

''For us to get the best out of it and for them to get used to it, they need to be playing multiple tournaments in the lead up."

Speight is being groomed as a sevens star after signing a landmark deal with the ARU last year that will allow him to continue playing Super Rugby with the Brumbies while training and playing with the sevens squad.

But his progression through the ranks has been put on hold a week after returning from the Wallabies' World Cup campaign as the sevens team aims to secure an Olympic spot.

Australia will play against Nauru, the Cook Islands and Tonga with the winner of the tournament locking in a berth at Rio next year.

On paper the games are a massive mismatch, with Nauru boasting just a handful of players and training on dirt fields.

"But we're not taking anyone lightly, we're going out there with the intention to blow teams off the park," Cusack said.

"We're keen and eager to perform this weekend. There's always pressure and there's added pressure because we're one of the favourites to win.

Cusack, 22, finally feels comfortable on the rugby field again two years after a knee reconstruction put his Super Rugby ambitions on the back burner.

He was part of the Commonwealth Games bronze-medal winning side last year and has Olympic gold on his mind.

"You're constantly building after injury, the last two years have been a bit forgettable. But to be selected now ... the body is working and I'm excited to be back playing footy," he said.

"I haven't had many setbacks of late, I'm getting the stage where I'm managing my body better and seeing the results of that."
