But the hard-running Super Rugby warrior said he did not want to get stuck being "OK at a lot of positions" as he continues his career resurrection.

McCabe wants to provide a much-needed energy boost when he makes his comeback to the Brumbies' starting line-up in their clash against the Melbourne Rebels at Canberra Stadium.

The Brumbies are trying to avoid a hat-trick of losses for the first time in three years and keep their play-off hopes alive with just three regular season games left.

McCabe has the perfect chance to show Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie he's ready to be thrown back into the Test arena for the series against France, which starts next week.

The 26-year-old has become the Brumbies' "Mr Fix-It" because of his ability to play almost every position in the back line, and is using his versatility as a weapon.

It's a role he's happy to play in the Brumbies and Wallabies set-ups, but he said he would like to focus on one position in the future.

"I guess I'd eventually like to settle down [in one position]," McCabe said.

"One thing you find from playing a lot of positions is that you get OK at a lot of positions without being really good at one in particular.

"That's something I'd like to do in the future, but right now I'm happy to be in the squad every week and that's been really good for me."

The Brumbies game plan will be altered slightly when McCabe, veteran winger Clyde Rathbone, wrecking ball No.8 Fotu Auelua and prop Ruan Smith are injected to the Brumbies' starting XV for the clash against the Rebels.

The quartet is known for a strong running game, indicating the Brumbies will try to hammer the advantage line to get momentum.

McCabe started the season as the Brumbies' inside-centre, but was forced to bide his time on the bench when Christian Lealiifano made his comeback from ankle surgery.

He will slot in at fullback to replace Jesse Mogg, but said he had no plans to usurp Wallabies No.15 and cross-code star Israel Folau.

"I'm not too sure where Ewen is thinking of using me [for the Wallabies] ... but he's certainly not looking at me in the fullback role I can guarantee that, I think that's been sewn up for a little while," McCabe laughed.

The Brumbies struggled to get any momentum on their two-game tour of South Africa, losing to the Pretoria Bulls and Free State Cheetahs.

They dropped down the ladder and out of the competition's top six for just the third time since the start of the 2012 season.

"I'm not too sure what I add, hopefully just inject a bit of energy into the place. It's tough on the guys who have played 80 minutes every week ... hopefully [Rathbone and I] are fresh and can add that energy and excitement," McCabe said.

Queanbeyan junior Colby Faingaa will play his first game as the enemy at Canberra Stadium after joining the Rebels last season.

The Rebels have never won in Canberra. Brumbies skipper Ben Mowen said: "It's probably the most important game we've played in a long time.

"You always want to knock over sides who have beaten you [like the Rebels did in round seven]. There are plenty of things on the table for us this week."
