Australian rugby's leading try-scorer from the past two Super Rugby seasons is facing another 12 months in international limbo while the International Rugby Board assesses his eligibility.

On-form Speight should be with the Wallabies on their tour of Europe, but he is instead training in Canberra in preparation for the Brumbies' 2014 campaign. He has been given no indication of when the issue will be resolved, but the softly spoken Fijian is unfazed and insists his only focus is on helping the Brumbies win a Super Rugby title.

''I've always said higher honours will take care of themselves if I'm playing well for the Brumbies and if the team is doing well,'' Speight said.

''I'll hit the reset button. Pre-season training [for the Brumbies] is a new start and a chance to get going again.

''I'm just focused on rehab and training with the boys to get ready for the next year so I can do my bit.''

Speight was at Gold Creek Primary School on Friday as part of the ACT's budding Brumbies program, with players visiting junior clubs to promote the sport to more than 450 children around the capital. The Fijian-born speedster is recovering from a knee operation but is expected to start running on Monday and return to full training in the coming weeks.

It was initially thought the Fijian flyer would qualify for Wallabies duties this month.

But a paperwork bungle and a stint playing in New Zealand in 2011 may keep him out of Wallabies contention for another 12 months.

Speight would have almost certainly been picked to play for the Wallabies in the Rugby Championship and spring tour had the IRB cleared his status.

IRB eligibility laws require Speight to have spent three consecutive years in Australia before he is able to play for the Wallabies.

The IRB set up a three-person committee to review Speight's case.

Speight arrived in Canberra in 2010 to start his Brumbies career.

But his clearance has been delayed while officials debate whether a stint playing for Waikato in New Zealand at the end of 2011 restarts his eligibility process.

Brumbies and Wallabies great Joe Roff called for commonsense to take precedence.

Speight was a key figure in the Brumbies making the Super Rugby final this year and he also guided the team to victory at the inaugural world club sevens tournament in London in August.

Speight had knee surgery at the end of the 2012 season and again last month to clean out some cartilage.

And after scoring eight tries last season, Speight is hoping for more success next year.

''I'll have full power back in my right leg now that the surgery is done,'' Speight said.

''If anything, my knee almost feels twice as better than when I went in. I'm feeling good and ready to go again, and hopefully we can go better again next year.''
