Ah Wong is one of a handful of outside backs trying to impress coach Stephen Larkham and position themselves for a starting spot when Henry Speight commits to the Australian sevens full-time.

But Ah Wong says the fight for his future and contract negotiations won't distract him from his 2016 mission as he aims for more game time in his second season in Canberra.

The Brumbies are using a specialist sprint coach this year, with John Pryor testing the players with a series of drills to improve their power and speed.

Pryor worked with Eddie Jones as part of the Japan set-up for the World Cup last year, and is now passing on his secrets to the Brumbies.

That includes trying to run down the field with weights dangling from a bar over each shoulder and carrying a bag full of water to cope with the continual change in balance.

"JP has brought a different perspective, it's the first time I've done anything like it and I've definitely found it beneficial. Hopefully that transfers on to the field," Ah Wong said.

"He puts us in bad positions when we're starting and then we've got to try to stabilise our core. It just gets everything tightened up.

"There is a chance there this year with Henry going, and you've got to be versatile enough to show that you can play there. Wingers are all about speed so if I want to be a legitimate option there, I have to work hard at that."

The Brumbies have been working to try to re-sign a host of stars beyond the end of 2016, including David Pocock, Christian Lealiifano and Scott Sio.

The trio is expected to field offers from cashed-up overseas teams as well as Australian Super Rugby rivals.

It's believed Lealiifano is edging closer to a new deal in Canberra while it is expected Pocock will be given time to weigh up his future and the massive contracts tabled by clubs in France.

But behind the off-contract Wallabies, there's a list of established players who are on coach Stephen Larkham's radar.

Ah Wong is one of those, declaring he wants to stay in Canberra beyond the end of the season to continue his push for more game time.

"I haven't started any sort of negotiations yet. I'm pretty sure they're starting with the big dogs and then working down the food chain to me," Ah Wong laughed.

"I'm off contract and I definitely want to stay here, I enjoy this club, the team and the environment.

"I kind of just have to let my performances do the talking and hopefully stay here a bit longer. It's part of the business, if you're not performing then you won't be here.

"That's my challenge and I'm not really thinking about any contracts or anything. I've just got my eyes set on performing."

The Brumbies will play two trial matches before their season-opener against the Wellington Hurricanes on February 26.

Larkham is set to trial a number of different combinations, with Ah Wong, James Dargaville, Lausii Taliauli and Aidan Toua competing for an outside backs spot.

Ah Wong arrived at the Brumbies as an outside centre after making a transformation from flanker to back-line powerhouse.

But Wallabies No. 13 Tevita Kuridrani has that spot locked down and Ah Wong hopes versatility will boost his bid for game time.

Speight is expected to be available for Brumbies selection for the first five games of the season before he turns his attention to the Rio Olympic campaign.

"There's definitely an opportunity on the wing and the more positions you cover, the more it helps with selection," Ah Wong said.

"I'm enjoying the challenge. I'm trying to push my case, and push Tevita as well because in the long run that's the best for the team."
