Player of the round: Pat McCabe. Now you know why Robbie Deans likes him as a No.12. The Brumbies utility overshadowed James O'Connor.

Try of the round: Michael Hooper. Sheer strength and belief propelled the Brumbies flanker straight through numerous Rebels defenders to score.

  • I felt Hooper and Fardy were more deserving of the MVP, but to be fair to him, McCabe completely shut O'Connor out of the game. That takes some doing, no matter how inept the rest of the Rebels team may have been.

    • No doubt Hooper deserves the 7 spot, he's having a helluva season all round, but Chris Alcock also had a very strong game up against the Force backrow. Add Pocock and we're really starting to show decent depth at openside, excellent to see.

      • You have to feel sorry for Greg. Picking an Australian team of the week is a bit like picking the best surfing spot in Alice Springs.

The Australian teams continue to flounder, and things look like they will get worse before they get better.

Next week will likely see the Brumbies fall to 8th on the table. The Waratahs should win, but even then will only take 7th place.

If the Australian teams continue in their current fashion, it will make a mockery of the conference system, with an Australian team gifted a finals spot at the expense of a better team from South Africa or New Zealand.

        • Jon-humility is clearly not your second name. While its true the Aussie teams havent shone there have been some encouraging signs, such as the excellent progress of the Brumbies' novices under RWC winning coach Jake White, the Rebels getting up over the Blues and every second performance of the Tahs has been a good one.

The biggest concern is the seeming inability of our sides to win on foreign soil. South Africa used to have this problem but seem to have overcome it.

There is very little excuse for it now that players perform so regularly in overseas venues. McKenzie blundered onto the high veldt with his charges mentally and physically unprepared. White is taking a different stance- that exposure to altitude before matchday is essential- which I have always advocated but very few Aussie coaches including Wallaby coaches have ever done.

It certainly beats wearing sunglasses on the plane which was Eddie Jones's pathetic solution for the veldt.

      • Dear oh dear Greg,
        NOT one (1) Force player!
That's sure to make one person a very unhappy camper.
On a serious note though great to see young Hooper continuing his good form. Pat McCabe solid as every - not pretty but effective.

        • Very disappointing, particularly given that the Tahs didn't close the game out till the 82nd minute. But then, the TOTW has been a pretty lazy effort every week this year hasn't it?

      • @ Jon, coming from Canada you obviously know heaps about Rugby. I agree that Australia have too many Super Rugby franchises but do not agree about next week. Tahs should win, Reds will find the Stormers hard to beat but the Brumbies will triumph at Loftus!! You heard it here first!!
