Fardy, Carter and Josh Mann-Rea completed a signing hat-trick for the ACT Brumbies on Tuesday as all three committed to new deals to stay in Canberra until at least the end of 2017.

They resisted any temptation to chase lucrative options in Europe and Japan, but more flexible sabbatical options are set to open the door for Fardy to take up a temporary playing stint in Japan after the World Cup.

It's understood Test coach Michael Cheika is keen to implement a contract system overhaul to allow players to commit to Super Rugby and the Wallabies as well as supplementing their earnings with short-term overseas playing stints between seasons.

Fardy says he got the urge to spend a long period playing abroad "out of my system" when he was with the Kamaishi Seawaves before joining the Brumbies three years ago.

But it's understood he will consider temporary offers from Japan if they fit in the timeslot between the end of the World Cup and the start of the Brumbies' Super Rugby season next year.

He would not miss any Wallabies fixtures or the start of the Super Rugby campaign.

"You've got to look at ways of dealing with players going overseas and the monetary issues," Fardy said.

"If the ARU are willing to do that, I think it's a good sign. You've got to work with both parties to make sure they get what they want out of a player.

"It's an individual decision for each player. I enjoyed my time overseas, and it's probably good that I got that out of my system.

"For guys that are playing Super Rugby at 19 or 20 years old, they get to their mid-20s thinking 'Gee I've done the same thing for a long time, how about something else?' "

The ARU has been faced with a mass exodus of players after the World Cup this year, with Adam Ashley-Cooper, Nic White, James Horwill and Sekope Kepu all moving to Europe.

Fardy was overlooked by Australian Super Rugby teams at the start of his career and decided to move to Japan to play professionally.

The Brumbies offered him a lifeline for the 2012 season and he earned his first Wallabies cap two years ago.

"For me, I got it [playing in Japan] out of my system early and when I got back I realised I just want to play good footy, be in a good program, which I have here at the Brumbies.

"I'm happy to stay around, maybe in the future I'll go overseas but I think I'm in the middle of my rugby career, not the end."

The trio's decision to re-sign with the Brumbies is a major boost for the Super Rugby club ahead of its contest against bitter rivals the Queensland Reds on Saturday night.

Cheika has told Carter that he needs to be more aggressive in the Super Rugby season to push his case for a spot at the World Cup.

The 26-year-old played in 11 Tests last year and said he never considered offers from overseas or interstate clubs before signing a deal with the Brumbies.

"We have seen guys go overseas, it's a personal choice. But there are more and more guys sticking around in Australia and hopefully it starts a trend of more people staying," Carter said.

"The chance to play for your country is huge. Any kid growing up wants to play at the highest level and that's for Australia, that's a big incentive and a main motivator for myself.

"Hopefully I can stay focused and play consistent footy. [Cheika] just wants me to build on what I was doing last year – strong at the set piece, physicality around the breakdown and defence and provide good ball-running options.

"I think everyone needs to up the ante in [physicality], me in particular. Hopefully I can bring it to the game for the Brumbies."
