Genia and Cooper have embraced their new roles under coach Michael Cheika, using cameo appearances to push for more game time on the spring tour of Europe.

But being on the bench together for the first time in more than a decade as teammates has given their partnership a fresh challenge.

Genia and Cooper had never started a game on the bench together in 11 years of rugby until last weekend's Test against France.

When Cheika threw them into the contest, they almost conjured a remarkable come-from-behind win.

"It's about a collective effort and seeing it from that point of view rather than being selfish as an individual, especially when you come away on tours like this," Genia said.

"We wanted to look at things we could do to help the team when we get on the field, that conversation was definitely helpful against the French.

"We've been around for a little bit, but it gives you a different perspective and grows you as players and people.

"We talked about the plays and things like that. Quade said that we won't have to worry about the starters or intricacies when we get on. Then we watched the game so we could do our best to expose them.

"I feel like we had a positive impact … it was a new experience and enjoyable. You've got to make the most out of every situation, you can't sit on the bench and whine."

Genia and Nic White are trying to wrestle the No.9 jersey away from incumbent Nick Phipps.

Phipps has been impressive since earning the position and is set to keep the role for at least one more week.

The competition for selection has sparked a strong rivalry as they battle for game time and jostle for spots in the team.

Genia has been Australia's first-choice halfback for almost all of his 57 Tests for Australia, but being dropped to the bench hit him hard last year.

"The thing I learnt most was to stay level-headed. I got so down because I didn't see it coming, whether that's rightly or wrongly," Genia said.

"I was down in the dumps for two weeks and then I got back in the team. But I learnt you can't be too high or too low on emotions when things don't go your way.

"I want to be positive and contribute as much as I can in a good way whether I'm in the squad or not."

Genia's combination with Cooper - which started when they played together as 15-year-olds - could prove pivotal late in the game against Ireland.

"I just want to get out on the field and help the boys out in any role," Cooper said.

"For me it's just about trying to create some energy when you get out there and trying to help the boys, putting your hand up to do whatever it takes."
