The Brumbies started their 10s campaign in Mauritius on Saturday afternoon Australian time with a clash against French glamour club Toulon.

It's the second time the Brumbies have been a part of the newly formed tournament, having lost the inaugural final in extra time to the Auckland Blues in 2014.

The Brumbies are the only team to be involved in both events and organisers have signed a three-year agreement to stage the two-day tournament in Mauritius until at least 2019.

That opens the door for the company to start talks with the Brumbies about the franchise being one of the marquee and constant teams to break into a unique market.

"We want to find a home for this tournament because the most successful annual events are in the same place," said World Club 10s boss Jon Phelps.

"There will be certain teams that you want [every year]. We knew the guys at the Brumbies but all other teams are new.

"Completely you can [build around the Brumbies], we got the chance to know a few of the Super Rugby teams when we were doing the bid in 2014.

"We're all about partnerships and with the Brumbies it was an easy call. They're taking it seriously and it's making other teams sit up and take notice."

Teams will play three pool matches on Saturday before a finals day on Sunday.

The Brumbies take on Toulon, the Italian All Stars and the Western Force in three 20-minute matches.

It also doubles as valuable opportunities for Brumbies players to press their claims for more game time in Super Rugby as the play-offs loom in July.

The Brumbies are keen to forge an arrangement with the 10s tournament, despite no prize money being on the line.

The fixtures fit perfectly into the Brumbies' calendar to give the squad more rugby action in the mid-year international break that means there's a five-week gap between Super Rugby games.

The Brumbies are also still considering shifting a game to Asia in the coming years or play a pre-season fixture against a European club.

However, some plans have been put on hold as the club continues its search for a new chief executive after Michael Jones agreed to leave the Brumbies in May.

The Brumbies were enlisting the help of an external recruitment company to fast-track their search, while the board is keen to push ahead with governance changes.

The players have opted to focus on rugby, and have backed any move to make an annual commitment to the 10s tournament.

"It is a unique tournament that you don't see a lot because there's Super Rugby or 15-a-side tournaments and then sevens as well," said Brumbies stand-in captain Robbie Coleman.

"We don't want to disappoint ourselves with a lacklustre performance, we want to show up."
