The Brumbies will sweat on the fitness of several key players this week after a brutal clash in Durban. At times their bench resembled a casualty ward. Nic White left the field in the opening 20 minutes with a suspected shoulder problem. Jesse Mogg had to join him with another shoulder problem. Scott Sio was cramping in his starting XV debut, Peter Kimlin hobbled from the field and Tevita Kuridrani injured his calf. It's a long list after a bruising contest.

The Brumbies played as close to perfect as any rugby team could hope with a scintillating display in the opening 40 minutes. They starved the Sharks of possession and were on fire in attack. Forwards threw 16 off loads in the first half, while the Sharks missed 12 tackles. The Brumbies belted the Sharks up the middle and then sent the ball wide to score all of their four tries in the corners. It was a start they could only dream of and had secured a bonus point before half-time. If they replicate that every week, they'll dominate every team.

Coach Jake White reshuffled his winning forward pack to take on the Sharks. The only two players in the same position from the week before were Stephen Moore and Sam Carter. But the changes worked wonders as the scrum dominated the Sharks pack. They did so even with the Sharks boasting Sprinbok veterans Jannie du Plessis and Beast Mtawarira. Sharks coach John Plumtree used the media during the week to try to put pressure on the Brumbies' forwards. In the end he should have worried about protecting his own players because the Brumbies' big men stepped up and dominated.

It would be easy think Smith never left the Brumbies' No.7 jersey. Two years after he retired from Australian rugby, Smith has been thrust into his old role with David Pocock suffering a season-ending knee injury. But the 32-year-old hasn't missed a beat. Just like old times he was in everything against the Sharks - pilfering balls, setting up the attack and being the team's everywhere man. Opposition teams will be having nightmares about trying to stop him.

The Brumbies will be riding a high on their way to Cape Town to take on the Stormers. But playing at Newlands can be one of the most daunting tasks in Super Rugby. The message out of the Brumbies camp was simple - enjoy the win but quickly move on to the next challenge. If the Brumbies can beat the Stormers, they will have their season set up for a charge to the play-offs after just six weeks. The challenge now is to avoid getting carried away with excitement.
