The 2012 under-21 National Netball Championships are underway in Perth today, with the state representatives keen to impress ahead of the 2013 World Youth Netball Championships.
For the first time in five years every state and territory will be represented at the tournament, with the Northern Territory and Tasmania rejoining the championship with the hope of ending NSW’s dominance.
The NSW side will be aiming to secure its fifth consecutive title this year, while the ACT will be hoping to improve on a best-ever finish of fifth in 2010.
Australia’s under-21 coach Carol Byers said the tournament will be a great opportunity for the girls to push for selection ahead of the 2013 tournament.
‘‘For the first time in a long time we’ve got eight teams with every state and territory represented,’’ Byers said.
‘‘They’re all in Perth to put their best out there on court and really try and make this World Youth Netball Championships squad.’’
The ACT’s first game is on at 12:15pm today.
