The only two teams to lift the Claxton Shield in the revamped Australian Baseball League will square off in WA in a four-game series starting on Thursday night.

The Cavalry (16-8) are three games clear of the second-placed Heat (13-11) and can establish a strong buffer going into the second half of the season.

Cone will be the Cavalry's starting pitcher for Sunday's game, taking over from Thompson, who gave up three runs in 1.2 innings in last weekend's 12-7 game-four win against the Adelaide Bite.

Thompson has been left off the Cavalry's roster for the series with Perth, but the 24-year-old has signed with the Musashi Heat Bears in Japan's Baseball Challenge League.

"We've been talking to Scott for a number of weeks, he had been unavailable with school commitments, finally got him available on a roster and things went pretty well for him," Collins said.

"We've got a bit of rotation going on with our pitchers and a bit of healthy competition. We're keen to find out what we've got with Scott."

Thompson will join the Bears at the end of the ABL season.

Pitcher James Kennedy also comes on to the Cavalry's active roster in place of Scott Korpi.

American reliever Aaron M Thompson will be keen to bounce back after giving up four runs in the last inning against Adelaide last Sunday.

Thompson has signed a minor league contract with his former Major League team, the Minnesota Twins.

"That's great for him," Collins said. "Hopefully he gets that opportunity to work his way back into the big leagues with that team that knows him."
