Dawson finished the second day of the Futures League game against the Queensland second XI on 106 not out at Manuka Oval on Tuesday.
The Comets will resume on 6-208 after Queensland declared its first innings at 6-439.
Dawson had a stroke of good fortune when he was dropped by the Queensland wicketkeeper when he was 94 before bringing up
ACT Comets coach Mark Higgs believes Dawson showed he still has what it takes to be considered for the NSW Sheffield Shield team.
"Dawso held us together, it was a fantastic knock," he said. "NSW still think of him very highly; he played the new ball really well and showed our guys how to play the new ball. He waited his time and when the ball was in his areas he really made them pay."
Queensland batsman Ben McDermott was dismissed for 161 early on day two in the search for quick runs.
McDermott - the son of Australian fast bowling great Craig McDermott - will make his Sheffield Shield debut for the Bulls in their match with South Australia in Adelaide on Friday.
