With rain reducing the match to only five overs per side, Dean top scored with 27 as the Comets posted 2-53 at Mark Taylor Oval.
Northern District made light work of the run chase and reached the target with an over to spare.
It was Dean's first regular season match for the Comets since he was overlooked for the Futures League competition last summer.
Blake Dean opened the innings with his brother and was bowled for 12.
Sydney Thunder batsman Aidan Blizzard – in his first game as coach of the Comets – and Michael Spaseski were dismissed for seven and zero respectively chasing quick runs.
Cameron Suidgeest, Ben Taylor, Sam Taylor and Henry Hunt couldn't get the vital breakthrough as the Northern District openers kept the scoreboard ticking over.
The Comets will be hoping for better luck from the weather gods when they take on Hawkesbury and the Central Coast in a double-header at Owen Earle Oval on October 11.
