ACT Sport and Recreation Minister Yvette Berry will announce on Thursday a revamp of the defunct ACT Sports Star of the Year Awards that was thrown into limbo almost 12 months ago.

The government will also move to cement the future of the ACT Sport Hall of Fame with a process for new inductees and recognising the capital's sporting history.

The event was thrown into doubt last year when ACT Sport disbanded after 30 years of representing more than 70 community sport organisations. The awards night was not staged last year.

Berry's appointment to the Sport and Recreation portfolio triggered a rethink of how to keep the awards alive to ensure Canberra's best athletes weren't forgotten.

The announcement on Thursday will include what is being dubbed "the gold Logie" of Canberra sport, where the public can vote for an athlete who excels in their sport and also gives back to the community.

An online voting system will be finalised and the capital's sporting community will decide on the people's choice award.

"When I was elected into the government I did represent the Chief Minister and present Hall of Fame awards," Berry said earlier this year.

"It's great to recognise our athletes in a meaningful way, but I'll have to see what the right way to recognise our athletes are.

"It seems every year we've got more champions that rise up and that's the great thing about the ACT, athletes are born and bred here."

There will be 20 current and former Canberrans as part of Australia's 410-strong team for the Olympic Games in Rio starting next week.

Of those, rugby sevens star Sharni Williams and BMX queen Caroline Buchanan lead the medal charge while Patrick Mills is competing at his third Olympics.

Tennis ace Nick Kyrgios, Socceroo Tom Rogic and Hockeyroo Anna Flanagan, who was left out of Australia's Olympic squad, are other Canberra athletes taking the city to a global stage.

Berry liaised with grass-roots organisations, professional teams and stakeholders to find the best way to recognise the capital's top sporting talent at elite and amateur levels.

She has also led a charge to create a more inclusive sporting environment for girls.

Berry injected $2.7 million in funding for local sports across 68 organisations this year, with $500,000 of that going to the asset repair and maintenance scheme.
