They may have "glass arms" in the outfield and the term "fast bowling" could be somewhat of an exaggeration, but Australia's over-70s team will be chasing a series win against England at Manuka Oval on Tuesday.
The three-match series is tied at 1-1 after the first two games in Brisbane and Sydney, giving them the chance to get one back on England after this year's Ashes defeat.
Canberra has two representatives in the Australian over-70s team, with wicket-keeper Peter Howes and Peter Nelson eager to use their home-ground knowledge to their advantage.
Howes, 75, is a late bloomer in the sport, having made his first-grade debut with the Northern Suburbs District Cricket Club in Canberra when he was 46.
He now plays in the ACT over-60s team, has umpired for the past 15 years and toured England with the over-70s Australian team in 2013, when they lost the series 2-0.
"Most of us have got glass arms, although I keep 'wickets and I'm not in the outfield," Howes said.
"The rest of the playing conditions are the same as a regular one-day international.
"It's a pleasant, but competitive carnival."
Howes stopped playing cricket at the age of 15 when he left school and took it up again when he was in his 30s.
He returned to the game when he moved from Sydney to Canberra.
"A guy who lived a couple of doors down from me was with a cricket club, and it took until Christmas to get into fifth grade," Howes said.
"Then I played indoor cricket at the first complex that was opened here and represented the ACT in indoor cricket in 1982 and '83 and that got me going with wicket-keeping.
"I've slowed up a bit, but I still enjoy it."
Since arriving from Melbourne in 1989, he's played from second to fifth grade, is a life member and runs the nets for the club's training sessions.
He's conducted weddings for Norths players, played for the ACT over-60s and is affectionately known as The Rev in ACT cricket circles.
Play in the over-70s match between Australia and England starts at Manuka Oval at 10am on Tuesday.
